Same old problem!

I`ve had speed problems for a long time now and thanks to answers from here it was put down to low snr.I moved from aol to bt and i`m still getting the same slow speeds....currently 228 kbps! When i put my phone number into speed checkers it says i`m only capable of getting 512k...however after a bit of research i`ve found out that my neighbours who are linked to the same telegraph pole can get speeds up to 5mb!I`ve checked 7 phone numbers within a 100 yard radius of my home and they can all get up to 4 or 6mb....so my question is this....a)how do i check noise ratios on a homehub and b) who do i complain to as the helpful man in India working for bt broadband tells me thats all i can get when its blatantly obvious that something is wrong with the external wiring.I`m plugged into the test socket by the way......please help i`m desperate!!

Try unplugging everything from the socket you are using and plugged into any other sockets including filters and then try just with the filter you have in that socket and then if that doesnt work then try another filter. Also internal wiring can cause issues. Check for noise on the line as it may be a piece of equipment you have plugged in but also if there is noise there then there could be an exposed junction box or poor external wiring as you said.

  • Link previuosly given shows how to get homehub stats - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm . You need to keep trying the bt speedtest to see your data rates and ip profile.

  • I`m only plugged into the test socket...line sounds clear when no home hub or router is plugged in but crackly when its plugged in......the router/homehub also drops connection when theres any sort of activity on the phone...i.e. answering a call...i`ve tried corded and cordless phones.

  • Just tried that again guvnor.....noise margin is 3.5 db..so looks like thats the problem again...do i contact bt broadband now and ask them to increase it?Also nearly 30 million fec errors....don`t know what it is but it don`t look good!

  • Here's some more info -can't recall if you have these already - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm , dodgy filters sound a possibility.
You used to be able to do a quiet test - dial 17070 and select option 2.
Danger here is if you don't confirm that all your side of things is ok then if bt turn up and find its your fault you pay big money.

  • I have come accross a very simular problem a while back, and in the end I had to get BT out to repair the line from the house to the telegraph pole which sorted the problem.
Bug? That's not a bug, that's an undocumented feature.

    Have you tried another filter?

  • tried two new ones...i think the issue here is the fact that according to the checks they do to determine what speed you should get i can only get 512k as i said BUT my neighbours line comes from the same pole and if i check her number it says she should be able to get 5mb....i think theres something wrong between the pole and the house but as soon as you mention broadband to bt they say that your isp has to escalate you and trying to get bt bb to do that is like trying to pull teeth.

  • I used to work for Fujitsu and I dealt with the broadband side of Post Offices. Whenever we called BT Southampton for a line test they said if the line is clear when your broadband equipment is unplugged then its the equipment at fault.
