All Basic Accounts Will Be Affected Sooner Or Later

PS can I refer you to this 2012 thread talking about basic bank accounts and pay at pump not bening allowed:

"A true basic account wont give you an offline card because you cannot have an overdraft with them and so there'd be a problem if you paid for something when you had insufficient funds to cover it but because the transaction wasnt done online/ in real time you've already received the goods/ service and gone."0 -

Halifax started this new rule on the 18th December 2017 which has been requested from Visa. And other banks will soon follow.
It's meant to prevent people going overdrawn so easily. Yet its ok for them to run out of fuel and be left stranded. I'm annoyed why hasen't this been published anywhere, or customers warned of the change as I only found out after my card wouldn't work at the asda fuel pump.
Basically I find this discusting and very dangerous potentially leaving women and children at risk of being stranded somewhere without fuel.
I look forward to a future thread from you where you complain the bank made you overdrawn because they allowed you to make an offline payment.0 -
Basic accounts weren't an idea of the financial institutions. They have to provide them under an EU Directive which says that everyone (bar some very limited exceptions, such as convicted criminals) must be given basic banking facilities.
In my opinion this is very constructive of financial institutions - everyone makes mistakes financially and this is a way to build up again following a financial disaster0 -
Indeed the banks would rather not offer/run them given the choice. Halifax themselves (and I'd wager the others too) say in the account T&Cs that if they become aware* that you've opened up a current account elsewhere they may close your Basic Bank Account.Basic accounts weren't an idea of the financial institutions. * And they will, via the CRA monthly feeds they take.0 -
Madness! How on earth can people possibly be expected to fill up with petrol between the hours of 6am and 10pm?0

Here are some ideas:
*use cash to buy your fuel. All filling stations I use have an ATM.
*organise your life so that you arrive at the pumps with enough cash in your pocket.
*take care to drive sensibly as possible, to keep fuel consumption as low as possible.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Having cash does not help if there was a cashier available to take his cash then he could pay with his debit card the problem occurs when the cashier is closed and the only way you can pay for fuel is via pay at pump0

If all else fails, you could conduct your personal finances in such a way that you qualify for a full-function debit card, or for a credit card. It's personal choice.0 -
A thread from 2014 with complaints about certain NatWest cards not working for pay@pump or on trains.

Even older, here’s one from 2012

To be fair to the OP, NatWest & RBS specify which debit cards numbers can't be used at P@P in their T&Cs.
It's a bit off for Halifax to suddenly remove the functionality and not tell customers of the change. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I think as it’s ALL basic account holders the Halifax don’t have to publish card numbers.
Also, as we only have the OP’s (slightly sensationalised) account we don’t actually know whether Halifax sent out notice of the change,====0
