The premium brands these days are Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sony. Though the latter two seem to have gone downhill in the last couple of years.

I'm not sure I'd agree about quality issues with either Panasonic or Sony but perhaps they are resting on their laurels. As for LG, two technically aware colleagues (both of whom work in the electronics industry) have reported serious problems with LG aftersales service recently and my own experience with LG products has placed them on my boycott list, so, personally, I'd stick with one of the other three.

There does seem from what I too have heard, to be a major issue with after sales service at LG. Also modern flat screen tvs are very susceptible to damage so I would go for one where you can get extended warranty including accidental damage as part of the deal even if you have to pay a bit extra for the insurance.
