I was agreeing with you really - you need the right tools to do the job but the tools alone can't do it for you.

Anyway do you think that someone could produce suitable photos for selling on these sites if, they have a good (trained) eye, excellent photoshop skills and a good quality bridge/super zoom camera but not a DSLR??

Artistically the photos may be good enough ie composition, focus, exposure etc are all great. However, the quality of the camara would likely be the stumbling block.
Many agencies do demand really high quality cameras used even if the images sold aren't huge posters.

Alamy has a list of suitable cameras which amounts to only around 50-60 cameras. The unsuitable list is screens long. In fact it's so long it's split into sections categorised by manufacturer.

I'm fairly certain that no bridge or compact camera would be good enough for Alamy. My Panasonic DMC FZ28 cost almost £250 around a year ago and it's deemed not good enough for Alamy.

Of course, that's only one agency so others may accept images from Alamy's unsuitable list but it gives you an idea of the sort of standard agencies are looking for.

Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!
  • Thanks I'll concentrate efforts on the other sites then.
  • My first attempt was rejected for exposure, but I got through the second go. I think if I put a direct link in I'll probably breach MSE's advertising policies, but if you go to Alamy and type robin Caroline Jones into the search box, you'll see my first four. Not expecting any sales on them until next Christmas :rotfl:

Advice would be to read the Alamy forums, they're very helpful, and to scrutinise every inch of your pics at 100%.

    Caz

Your photographs are really lovely. Out of interest, how did you go about shooting them? And what equipment do you use?

Good luck with getting them sold!

    Hi Guys,

Have just read all the posts above. I am looking into setting up my own website to sell some of my photographs (Prints rather than digital copies). Do i need to set up as a limited company, or could i sell the images online via paypal. I dont anticipate that i will be selling much, but i figured that its better than giving my photos away to micro stock sites.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Ive often been asked about prints for some of my work and people have suggested i should try sell some. Dont really know how i would go about it though for landscape work.

    Hi,

Just after a bit of advice if possible please.

I've just returned from six months in Africa and have some good wildlife shots if I do say so myself :) as I was able to get very close to the animals.

Just wondering if anyone knows good places to sell this kind of image to or competitions that would be worth entering?

Also, bit of a random one...whilst in Zimbabwe I managed to get several shots of a lion cub with a can of fanta looking like it's drinking from it...I said it was random!

Is this the sort of thing that companies would be interested in for advertising or am I way, way off?

    Thanks for your help!

  • HI, My friend is a live music, band and event photographer and trying to find the best site for selling prints. Preferably one that prints and posts them all for you as he's very busy (Full-time work plus photography every spare minute)
I read through most the posts but couldn't quite see anything that matched what he needs.

Any suggestions for how he could boost his income would be great. Thanks.

So now, everyone is a professional photographer... :D

It must be a bad news for current professional photographers.
    More pictures, more competitions.
Money is not the root of all evil.
It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.

Heard this programme a few days ago and thought it might be helpful. (broadcast on 6 June 2010).
<can't post the link but go to the BBC website and search for Law in Action>

The programme looks at the law on taking photos and on having your image taken (by CCTV, police etc).

The link has some general blurb and a podcast of the programme.
