Turkey won't fit in freezer, lol

my daughter ordered my shopping and ordered a large turkey for christmas because I have my two sisters coming to stay.

The problem is it won't fit in the freezer. I can put it in the fridge for now, but wondering if anyone is up on all this cooking business, because I'm not really. Wondering if I defrost it in the fridge, can I then leave it in there until Christmas day, or maybe I have to cook it before then.

Or maybe I should donate it to a local foodbank and get another one nearer the time

thanks, it's too much for me :D

It will take up to 48 hrs to defrost in your fridge. You do have a proper food safety regime in your fridge? A thawed Turkey is a food safety time bomb.Once thawed you have three days to use it before it gets 'sniffy'.

I despair when folks say "cook it". Cooking does not preserve it.It cooks it to eat.At best once cooked you have 3 days to eat it.Frankly ,most domestic fridges are woefully inadequate, and proper storage to avoid cross contamination is lacking too.Its why there is more food poisoning this time of year than any other.

I work in the meat trade BTW.

I can just imagine me with an axe out in the garden trying to hack through a frozen turkey, lol

If there are just 3 of you .... you could've had plenty with a regular turkey crown .... just saying :)

"Large" when it comes to turkeys is akin to ordering a labrador dog.

If you took everything out of the freezer entirely would it fit?

You could simply sort your freezer food into "price order" and take it out, by size/price until you've got space..... you might just displace £10 of food you have to eat in the next 1-3 days and be done with it.

Have you got a secure garden shed/garage? A turkey too big for the freezer is going to be too big for most family fridges! As it is so cold, atm, you could safely leave it in an UNHEATED shed/garage wrapped as it is until Thursday, then remove the wrappings and leave it to defrost - still in the shed/garage (as long the shed/garage is a livestock free zone), until Christmas eve. Then, get someone to cut off the legs and wings so that it will fit safely in the oven xxx - and cook according to the label on the bird x
