The disappointed we've not moved before christmas thread

  • A week ago my buyers told me their mortgage offer expired 14th Jan, and they've got a dog arriving in the new year for the new house.
They've been waiting since August (Which is long enough in my book), so even though my upward chain isn't complete I'm moving out... cats into the cattery, rabbits and other half down to my parents 80 miles down the M1 (We need alot of hard standing for them), stuff into storage and I'll be lodging up here in the week and living at MY parents during the weekend. It's also year end (I'm an industry accountant, and I'll have to muck out my other half's horse daily :rotfl:).
Now on a daily chase to try and get exchanged (For my sale) tommorow (Or at least next week); and my solicitors' phone line is out of order !
It's very inconvienient but me and my partner don't want to go through the hassle of selling the house twice - and we also really like our purchase.
Our buyers' solicitors are also horrendously slow, but I doubt we'll find better buyers...
Sent my Dad into our solicitors anyway, will have to give him the authority to act on my behalf no doubt..
  • We're just over a month in to our first house purchase, buying a house with No Chain and we were praying it didn't go too fast as we didn't want to move before Christmas!

We're happy to take advantage of the time off work between Christmas and New Year to declutter and start packing before hopefully moving towards the end of January

I wish I was that laid back. Our house is fully packed away after setting exchange/completion for end November early December then everything has gone quiet and we do not know weather to just unpack or keep it as is and hope it will happen soon.

Never pack before exchange (unless exchanging/completing on same day) What if it all falls through?
2024 wins: *must start comping again!*

Rookie mistake first house sale, felt we were just making things easier by being prepared. Their is a big list of lessons learned on this selling/buying journey.
  • When we spoke to our solicitor we said we wanted to be in for christmas. Our first night will be the 23rd or christmas eve. FTB's so no dramatic pressure to move. We're idiots for moving in that close! haha

Moving house is so stressful. Much of it is about not knowing, but if you stop setting expectations when you have pretty much no control over a situation, then the stress will reduce a little bit.

Why do people let it affect Christmas? Presumably you’re looking forward to many more Xmas’s in the house, one isn’t going to make a jot of difference.

How you feel about Christmas and choose to enjoy it is a complete choice from inside yourself and has little to do with outside forces. The problems come when we genuinely believe that it’s outside that makes inside happy.

I’d choose to enjoy Christmas at a relaxed pace, enjoy visiting and hosting without the stress of unpacking. And then look forward to moving in the new year when pretty much nothing else is happening anywhere. What a good way to fill the dull months of January and February instead of manically trying to set up home and actually missing all the proper fun of Xmas.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We'd be moving anyway as our lease agreement would be up at end of March and there's no way we want to stay in this house - so if it falls through we'll find another rented house or put our stuff in storage.

We're not fully packing everything up, just stuff we won't be using - summer clothes etc. and getting a headstart.

That would drive me mad in fairness - we're only laidback as we know there's zero chance of moving before Christmas - then our Vendor goes on holiday herself between Xmas and NY so we won't exchange until Mid Jan.

We've kept in good contact with the EA and Vendor to try and ensure there's no problems - so touch wood we'll be ok
  • we have sold to first-time buyers and are buying an empty property.
