Router Left On, Will It Damage?

  • I don't unplug. I just turn things off because I prefer to have things powered down overnight.

I wasnt' asking about whether leaving it plugged in would be dangerous (i have no idea whether it could be), but whether having it permanently on and running might wear out the hardware.

I have a TalkTalk router, which means it's probably not a very good one, does the job though. I want to leave it on over night to finish downloading something. Normally I switch everything off overnight. If I leave it on is there a chance it could overheat or something?

    You contradict yourself.

Leaving it running means the worlds supply of electrons will eventually be exhausted. :D

If u turn it off the tooth fairy cant get down the line.

How many more times must you be told to leave it on,but turn it off and accept the low speeds.

so what you going to do.

    Charming attitude

No contradiction at all. The issue is about whether having it running will overheat or wear out the hardware in some fashion, not whether having it plugged in would specifically cause a problem

If you keep switching the router off, the internet will keep building up and ultimately causes a massive blockage in the phone line.

And it will cause a mess on carpet if it leaks out of phone socket......very corrosive

Turning it on and off is more likely to wear out hardware as the temperature will go up and down which will make the components expand and shrink which can break joints eventually.

Do you really think and ISP's would risk that? As for wear you could always supply your own router for use with most ISP's.

Yes eventually as with all components .
The eventually could be five ten twenty years .
Turing it on and off will more than likely cause electrical failure within a much shorter time span .
Turning a router on and off will drop the line speed as the exchange sees a fault.Line will continually re sync at a lower speed .
  • Leaving it one doesn't seem to be working.

Every other day, roughly, the connection seems to just drop and I have to switch it off and on again to resolve it.

    Cheap rubbish router obviously
