Inaccurate AA Car Check HPI
So Back in June I did a HPI car check through The AA, all came through clear and the car was purchased.
I am looking to sell the car now and the people calling me are telling me the mileage is inaccurate as there is a jump in mileage in the MOT history and then goes back down. This was not flagged up in the AA Car Check.
I called the AA and they said they do not guarantee mileage and to contact DVLA as they are responsible. I contacted DVLA, they said they don't share mileage information with anyone and to contact DVSA. DVSA said they can correct the discrepancy provided I can give them some paperwork with a mileage for that year, unfortunately I can't.
The car is now proving difficult to sell. The thing that annoys me us that the AA guarantee their report to the tune of £30K but don't include mileage according to the lady on the phone.
Here is an exert from their T&Cs
We do not warrant that the Information is true, correct or complete and subject to 6.3 below we shall not (other than upon the terms of the HPI Guarantee) be liable in any circumstances for any loss or damage arising from any inaccuracies, faults or omissions in the Information, unless caused by our negligence or wilful default.
Really don't know what to do, The T&Cs seem to negate any guarantee they advertise

Likely to just be an error at the MOT one year, seen it reported a few times.
Do you have service history that shows mileage as this should put any potential buyers minds at rest?
What kind of compensation did you expect from the AA?0 -
I called the MOT centre in question, they verified the mileage that is on that particular MOT. They even said they would post me out a hard copy of their hand written version, though I have not received that yet.
There is service history but none for that particular year.
I feel let down that reading the T&Cs the AA are not will to take responsibility for any inaccuracies, they seem to have built in a get out clause.
All i really want is a fair price for the car, i.e. the difference between what I sell it for now and what I bought it for. I bought it below market value and has only been used on school runs, the car is in very good condition so was not expecting to take a hit on it.0 -
Only used for school runs, one way to put a buyer off.
You were not expecting to take a hit on a used car? Yet you failed to check the mileage properly?
Where is the service history and your MOT check that you did before buying it?
A car wont be difficult to sell due to a minor typo with the mileage. Its difficult to sell because its a car with little demand or the fact its only been used for school runs or the fact you have only owned it a short while.
You owning it a short while knocked a lot of its value in my eyes.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
get someone to read the mileage on the ECU. The MOT centre will have checked their records, yes, but entirely possible if they entered the incorrect mileage the records too are incorrect.0

What does the online MOT history say?
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
Is this different to what it said back when you bought the car?
When was the discrepcancy? The mileage at the last five or so tests is printed on the MOT certificate.0 -

You could have easily checked the MOT mileages using the link AdrianC posted before you bought it if this was something that you would have been concerned about.I called the MOT centre in question, they verified the mileage that is on that particular MOT. The fact that it has missed at least one of it's services shows that it hasn't been looked after well so that will reduce its value and put buyers off.
Like other have said the car will be worth less simply due to the fact that you haven't owned it long and have only been using it for short trips.0 -
I guess I felt I didn't need to check the car mileage history my self as the AA said they would do it for me. At the time I was in need of a car and short on time so took advantage of the AA car check to do my checks for me, to expect that report to be accurate is not asking a lot.
I don't mind loosing money on it but I don't expect to lose 30-40% of a 10K car value in 6 months.
MOT mileage is as follows:
Sep '14 27K
July '15 12K
July '16 24K
June '17 34K
Service stamps 2013 - 7K 2015 - 12K 2017 - 34K0 -
<sigh> 4yo car, 12k miles... Premium price...

Ok, so on the face of things the SEP 14 MOT recorded the mileage wrong.
You have a service record from the year before showing 7k miles and the year after showing 12k.
You can show this to potential buyers. This is not going to knock £4000 off the value of your car.0 -
What car is it, you may have an unreasonable expectation of its value?0
