I took 10 old pound coins to TSB last week, and an old fiver, which were a accepted and changed. I bank with TSB.

Take them to a main line bank where you have an account and ask.

Otherwise - put them in a charity box.

Apparently the Post Office will take them and most high street banks, if you have an account with them, will still take them too. The Royal Mint suggests there is no legal obligation for them to do this though.

Much like old pounds, shillings and pence they will probably live on through coin collector packs and what not, failing that up the back of sideboards, sofas and under floorboards just waiting to be discovered :)

So the charity has to waste its time, money and resources dealing with the problem?

It is no problem to the Charities - they will find the right home, business, collector for just about anything.

    Don't you believe it.

My wife works as a volunteer in two different charity shops and relates stories of people trying to use them as their local recycling depot for 'just about anything', mostly completely unsaleable items.

It doesn't seem to be realised that not everything is of any value to charities... and not only that but they actually have to pay - on a regular basis - for van loads of this bric-a-brac rubbish to be taken away.

People get offended when told that things can't be accepted but, very often, that's just the way it is.

Charities seem happy to accept foreign coins as donations. Why would they object to donations of old pound coins? They are still worth £1.

My last remaining round pound lives in my car and is occasionally used as a trolley token.

Last week I got a charity request from Sightsavers (preventing children going blind in 3rd world countries).

They actually say they will take old pound coins, so I've sent mine there rather than bothering to go to the bank.
