  • I have some sympathy. I live on a cul-de-sac which is itself a steep side road off a very steep hill. All local bus routes are suspended. The main road has been closed downhill today on safety grounds; watching cars and vans try to come uphill and get stuck, wheels spinning, at the extra-steep point has been very entertaining today. One of these stuck cars has been abandoned across the entrance to our side road since lunchtime. There is no way any large or small removals vehicle would be getting to my place today and probably not tomorrow - and this is in London within the North Circular. I'd have to hire/buy a tank.

Not that this helps the OP legally, but I can see why it might just not be possible to find another van.

I do sympathise, but this is one of those situations in life where you really need to be 100% focussed on getting it done, not wasting time trying to work out if you can get out of it (you can't). Do the following:

    - Call every removal company and man with van on Google
    - Ditto Gumtree
    - Ditto Yellow Pages
    - Call friends/family/anyone you know and ask them if they know anyone who can help
    - Call the estate agent and ask the same
    - Post asking for help on any social media accounts you have. Ask people to repost

Rinse and repeat until you figure out a way to get it done. Good luck!
  • Everything is downstairs and rammed in our kitchen and lounge, closest to our front door.

We live about 10miles out of the nearest city, in the Forest of Dean.

The closest van hire have booked me in for a 7am collection - If they are willing to let the van out.

Maybe I could suggest a larger deposit to the rental company?

Or maybe you can get someone else to do the driving/loading (as suggested). Look round for a man + a van instead of just a van. Completion is not a flexible date. You are legally committed to move that day.

Hope it all went to plan - do update once your in.
  • We did it!! They would only let us hire a Luton and roped a few friends in. Luckily the house we were occupying was empty so we could do a few trips.

It was suprisingly good in the snow and ice!!

Thanks for the update. Enjoy your new home.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...
