I got caught doing the ton in the Negev desert. Very nice Israeli police officer (after drawing his gun) let me on my way after telling me to slow down. I didn’t tell him that I was trying to catch up with some M1 Abrams tanks on the back of low loaders as they looked cool.

I was arguing with my missus about the next turnoff on our route home. I said we should wait for another junction and I determined to do that. As a result of the argument becoming heated, I was photographed doing 76 in a 70 limit.

This happened quite some time ago, which is why I was lucky to escape with a £60 fine and 3 points. The argument was the result of a non-driver not understanding that junctions are not in the same place going North, as they are going South. I was correct about the junction, but totally wrong to allow the argument to blind me to my speed.

I resisted the temptation to blame my OH, but I did actually use the argument excuse, whilst admitting full responsibilty. I have no idea if it led to the clemency of the result.

And yes, we are still together after all these years. And I do sometimes win an argument.

    But only sometimes.

    Who? <googles>
    Oh. Right.

Does the word "anecdote" mean anything to you?

I find that somewhat less likely than the OP's second-hand anecdote.

That wasn't lenient, it was the normal outcome.

These days no action would be taken at 76.

Got stopped after joining the M5 coming from Exeter racecourse doing 95 through a 50 roadworks in the late 90's

Asked me why I was speeding and I said the Autobahn is unrestricted! Oh I not in Germany am I. Sorry back to Germany tomorrow just been home on leave from the Army. Once again said sorry and that I was used to Germans driving up my !!!! at 100+

He let me go as I was going back the following day! I wasn't but he did not know that! LOL :D

Also been stopped in Germany and offered an on the spot fine of 200DM with a receipt and 100DM without a receipt!

I have always found that if you are polite and respect the officer doing the job you have a better chance of getting away with it.

It also helps if you are speeding to be very observant and look out for any police helps. Less chance of being caught!

It's probably more likely (but still vanishingly unlikely) in these days of digital cameras than back in the film era, when every frame wasted on something will within the long-standing ACPO guidelines meant a larger margin would have gone un-photographed.

If it happened at 76, then my money's on the OP not being able to count carriageways.

How fast were they going if you needed to drive at 100MPH to catch up with them?
