Strangest excuses you have heard for speeding?

  • Noah bought a new Mercedes SLK Kompressor and was out for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the wind was blowing through what was left of his hair, and he decided to open it up.

As the needle jumped up to 120 km, he suddenly saw flashing red and blue lights behind him. “There’s no way they can catch a Mercedes,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 130, 140 km…. then the reality of the situation hits him.

“What the hell am I doing?” he thought and pulled over.

The police officer came up to the Mercedes, took Noah’s driving license without a word, and examined it and the car. “It’s been a long day, this is the end of my shift, and it’s Black Friday. I don’t want to do more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you are free.”

Noah thinks for a few seconds and says, “Last week my wife ran off with a cop. I was afraid you were trying to give her back.”

“Have a nice weekend,” said the officer.

Well the Highway Code does say "move quickly past the vehicle you are overtaking".

I've been in situations where a slow-moving car has sped up as I pulled out to overtake. Some drivers do it deliberately, and if I've committed to the overtake, and getting past such a driver momentarily takes me over the speed limit, I make no apologies for it. Far better to be past and away than have to deal with such idiots.

If you're then stopped by the police, an apology might make all the difference.

That's the best excuse by far. I can quite believe that there are some would think this an effective technique.

No, under those circumstances I'd make a stand. The moron dangerously trying to race an overtaker should be the one being stopped, and if a copper can't see that I'd take it as far as I could.

The problem is ... the other driver committed a subjective offence (depending on the opinion of the police officer); the overtaker committed an absolute offence of speeding. Not a good position to be in to make a moral stand. ;)
