Money Moral Dilemma: How can I stop my friend 'forgetting' to buy rounds?

Kick him in the plums.
His memory problems will vanish overnight.

Whenever a group of old schoolmates get together, we have a tumbler/beeermug on the table/bar into which each person drops an amount of money, whether it is a £20 note or a couple of coins.
That pool is then used (possibly added to) and used to pay. It also invariably leaves a substantial tip. Incidentally, we graduated from school in the mid 1960s and are now in our 70s0 -
My preference would always be that everyone buys their own drinks - I can't see how a kitty or rounds is fair for everyone involved (and devoid of pressure to drink quicker)
Ok ok - maybe if you have a spreadsheet, but who wants that on a night out??You were only killing time and it'll kill you right back0 -
Reading this thread made me see how stupid rounds are, if you all buy your own things individually there’s no hassle like this to worry about0

Rounds may indeed be stupid, but its funny how people who aren't going to put their hands in their pockets never object when drink is being bought for them. Just had this on our Christmas night out last week. Anyway, as Kags53134 said, in Germany they normally mark your beer mat and then get everyone to pay individually, just for what's on their beer mat. Simple.0 -

It's the only way to stop people from bullying you into buying rounds because they know their drink is more expensive than yours. It goes both ways.
>What are you having?
<I don't want one.
>No seriously I'll get you a drink.
<I'm fine thanks
>Go on, I'll get you a drink it's no problem/
<Ok, I'll have a small coke.
>Double whiskey and small coke please
time passes
>Right, it's your round.....0 -

Well, there's a simple solution in this case - buy them a small coke!0 -
If you go out for a drink with European friends (Dutch and Swedes definitely) you'll find everyone buys their own drinks. So suggest to your mates that in the German market you do things the European way.0

As a vodka and coke drinker, I try to avoid being in a round. Bad enough in the Uk, but worse abroad.
I will be ordering the most expensive drinks, so for me, a pay as I go is the way.

I have an old friend who, some years ago, started disappearing when we went into a pub and it was his round, usually with a parting shot of "I'll have a bottle off Bud" or something similar. It didn't take me long to get wise to this and the response "Eff off you cheeky git, it's your round" proved quite effective.0
