Wish I had any hints or tips, but I am all out atm. I am going to continue my ostrich behaviour until the girl goes to uni in three weeks.

The girl picked her A Level results up on Thursday, she did amazingly. She has got into her first choice of uni (she didn't need high grades as its an arts uni and she was accepted on the strength of her portfolio) but is still in high drama mode about whether she is doing the right course for her. But she is excited about living in London. She came in with me and the small two yesterday so she could go to the National Gallery. Me and the boys saw Horrible Histories, was fun and the tickets were very cheap, booked back in June, three rows from the stage. We them went to the Tate Modern and queued up for the Obliteration Room. The kids loved it.

Me and the girl also went to see Sister Act last week. Was OK, but glad I only paid £17 a ticket. We have tickets for back to the future on Thursday. Am holding out hope it does the film justice. Its one of my favourites  and MJF was my proper teen crush.

Finances still in crash and burn mode. Kitting the girl out for uni is digging a hole right now.

  • Morning Drawingaline,

I've heard good things about Obliteration Room - I should take my two. Looks like their kind of thing. Tate is free too so another plus.

Congratulations to your daughter - she's done very well. I remember getting kitted out for uni, going around the big yellow and buying all sorts of kitchen and home furnishings. Good fun but like you say costly.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Back to the Future, we havent done the theatre as a family in a very long time but thinking of getting tickets for this show as part of the kids Christmas presents.

  • Sympathies on the cost of kitting out for uni...although it’s been 5 years 😳 since DD1 went, I remember the mad frenzy to get her sorted out!  Huge well done to your DD on her results 🥳.

Will let you know how it is. I haven't read a bad review, but the film really is special to me. I found Heather's hard as a musical, mainly because Christian Slater wasn't in it 🤣

I find art stuff hard... my mind doesn't work that way.  When we went to London we went to the National Gallery (I think? It was the one next to Nelson's column)... I found it endlessly dull, although I liked the building's architecture a lot.  I only recognised the Van Gogh pic of sunflowers in the whole place :D We went into an auditorium and there was a weird film of people walking around in the snow... I really didn't get it.  Others were leaving in tears as it was so moving and I was like WTAF? I'm obviously a heathen.
I'm sorry finances are tight, it's a tricky time.

I go to the Tate for a laugh... I don't get why half the exhibits are there... Makes me feel much better about my own art though...

  • So we went to see Back to the future. The girl loved it and said she plans to see it more times with rush tickets once she is in London as it made her happy from the start
Unfortunately, for me, while the performers were amazing and the effects brilliant, it just wasn't right. MJF was my proper teen crush, and I know the film so well I can pretty much quote it word for word. And because of this I just didn't/couldn't love it. We sat row B which was lovely, up close and we never normally sit in stalls (end of row was cheap) but it did mean the car had less of an impact as we missed bits of the effects. And the songs were very forgettable. At least Heather's had really catchy numbers. Oh well, I was always on the fence about it and am glad  have seen it.

Bank holiday weekend saw me away with my guiding family. I had a blast. Such fun, a festival for girls 11 upwards, in a safe location.eaders didn't have to do anything, just turn up and let the go. Count them back into tents at 10pm. I relaxed, did cross stitch, some training, resd my Kindle, ate loads of ice cream.......honestly most relaxing camp experience ever! Planning in going back next yesr, feedback from the girls was positive. Only downside was attempting to get out of the New Forest on Bank Holiday Monday 🤣

The girl is off to uni next Saturday. Still in denial, she has sorted nothing. We have done all our shopping (bar a couple of items) the rest is on her now. Need to be able to get it all in our car, not convinced that will work. Need to get into the loft to get out the boxs for her record player and speakers. Atm her priorities are buying more vinyl and buying yet more concert tickets! She won't know who she is living with until she moves in, although she is in a chat geouo with people from her has, but there she over 700rooms so chances are she won't actually be in a flat with any on the chat. She has also connected either a few people doing her course which is nice. One of them she met on the open day and liked so that's nice for her. She has her last shift at work tomorrow, I don't think she realises how poor she will end up being. But she really didn't want to transfer her job, but it will be there for her when she comes home in the holidays.

Financial stuff is looking bleak right now. Silver lining of the girl loving out will be lower electric and water bills though.

  • Just dropping in to say finances still stretched, back to school has been a shock to me system, my calm mornings are back to being frantic and stressed. Sleep pattern is over the place and it's really beginning to hit me that the girl is moving out.

She finally started packing yesterday, am beginning to think that she won't fit everything in the car, if hubby wasn't coming it would definitely be easier, but he wants to see where she will be living and an extra pair of hands will be useful. Glad I booked parking, it is drop off in 15min slots only! Parking is about 5 mins walk away.

So all go in our house right now, never regretted getting rid of our 7 seater last year until now!

From experience - I think we took 2 cars when DS moved to uni the first year for similar reasons. In reality we took far too much stuff - including food and cooking equipment that weren't needed. Subsequent visits were therefore then bringing stuff home. Remember there will be home visits or your visits to her at which she can pick up anything critical.
