Best anti-virus software to use?

The McAfee AV protection for my laptop that I got free a few years back is now due for renewal. Recent years it was 29.99 now gone up to 59.99. Obviously I'm not renewing at that price. Question is - what do I replace it with? I don't use the laptop much (usually on iPad or phone) but don't really want to be open to any possible viruses. Any ideas?

Windows built in AV. I supplement it with the subscription version of Malwarebytes (specifically not the free version). Malwarebytes Premium runs in the background to catch dodgy downloads, web sites, etc, the free version only scans after it’s too late...0

Take a read of this article and decide for yourself with regard to Windows Defender.
Either way, you have been paying way over the odds for McAfee.

I use Bitdefender Free as AV and also have MBAM corporate/enterprise (akin to the premium version, so runs in the background too).
I got this version of MBAM free via a link on this forum quite some time back. It's still working fine and does catch some dodgy links that websites might try and load in the background.0 -
I use the Paid version of Bitdefender Antivirus which is a fully integrated system.
I set it up and set to "Autopilot" and rarely hear from it, or even know it's running, except for a weekly report and a few Anti-ransomware alerts, any new program will be prevented from writing to, or modifying, any "protected" areas, until I review and allow it
As a complete system it is unlimited devices and works with Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS devices so provide a multi-point defense against threats getting onto my systems
Yes it costs money, but, for me, it is very acceptable, and the free version uses the same technologies as this version, but without the integration, and BD is regularly at the top of the Comparative sites and has been for a long time0 -
^^ And you believe that you need AV on android and IOS ?? :rotfl:
tip : ignore the comparative sites - all AV's differ by points of a percentage and that is under lab conditions with viruses being thrown at them that you are never going to encounter in the real world.
I like the idea of the ransomware protection though - thats pretty neat if you cant control yourself from clicking stupid links in spurious emails0
