Because most people move house in the week and their mates are at work?
Before you move house, acquire some mates who work flexible hours. Or who are prepared to take the day off for some sufficient beer and pizza. NB don't start the day with the beer...

Seems you need to quantify the job properly before you continue a discussion with hubby.

    In particular distance and access.

I would be getting a quote or two from local removers.

DiY moving is a mug's game unless you are young, fit, don't have any heavy or large furniture, and don't mind the odd thing getting broken.

When you know the cost you might well think it worth paying.

We moved less than 100m up the road, but still hired a small lorry to move things out of the flat (though in the end in was over a year until buyer moved into our old place!)... it was worth it to have removal guys take heavy stuff into our new place and carry things upstairs. We used the guys we used before who were way cheaper than anyone else, cost us a couple of hundred quid, but was worth it. We saved a little by not asking them to pack or move fragile things, which we just carried up the street ourselves!

If it is just the two of you forget DIY

    Pick the biggest 5 items.

Workout how you will do those and how long it will take.

If it's literally 16 metres away, you really don't need to hire the van.

    We did! :rotfl:

We moved approx. 20 metres down the same road.

I couldn't face carrying all our furniture - especially beds, sofas, washing machine etc. The removals company found it quite funny, although they got two jobs out of it as the people in the flat we were buying decided to use them as well as they though it would make the process smoother (which it did as they all worked together and I just ferried cups of tea between the two removals vans)

If you contact a man with a van type comapny you can probably get them to send the men without the van, if you want.

I used a company like that when I needed to move all my furniture from my house to my garage, to have some work done to my house. 2 blokes showed up, moved everything out to the garage, then 8 weeks later came back and moved it all back the other way. I can't recall the exact cost but less than £200 for each time.
I wasn't moving any big kitchen appliances but did have things like a sofa, double beds, and (the big one) several thousand books

I didn't have much choice as I could not physically have done it myself (and too much stuff for me to feel comfortable asking mates to do it for me)
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

We are moving this time next week and are hiring a man and a van £30 an hour for two men compared to removal firm for £600 and that doesn't include if their is a delay they want £50 extra for that. We have literally got furniture (sofa bed couple of chests dishwasher and washing machibe) to move in van rest is in storage or coming in car.
  • If you can afford it, get the professionals in. Distance isn't the issue. Loading/unloading is. If, on the other hand, you have better things to spend your hard earned on, a move of such a short distance is entirely possible on a DIY basis. But it will take 3 times longer and leave you 10 times more frazzled than you had predicted! You pays your money (or not) and takes your choice.
