Well, he can carry the cats, can't he? If not, stick all four in the kennels for the day.

DIY if you are under 47.... Get a possie of friends to help, and hold an instant housewarming.

Remember to collect cats in the morning.

    Oh, and the sproglet!

First off, whether or not you get removals, ship the kids & pets off to a daycare / child minder / pet sitter / friend / boarding.. you don't need them creating more work and demanding food and comfort. Even with removals, you still need to direct things, make sure important things aren't buried deep in boxes, clean the new & old place without worrying about crying and set feeding times.

    Please answer a few questions
    * Are you buying & selling same day? (ie no overlap in having both places for a few hours/days)
    * How far actually is it? 0.01miles ~next door.. or 10 houses.. or 0.5miles..

We are moving from a 2 bed to a 4 bed, just more concerned that we could be sat waiting for keys and that wouldn't be ideal if we have to take the van more than once to ferry the larger items...

    Get a bigger van?

None of the moves we did was local. One was 60 plus miles from a 3 bed house with 2 children and the usual household appliances and furniture. We had one friend and a hire van and it was fairly easy to get everything out and the house cleaned by mid morning. You do need to be super organised though, but you do if you use a removal company too.

No way would I pay for removals for such a short distance, but I'm getting the impression that you really don't want to DIY whatever we say.
  • If you have buyers waiting to move in once you move out I would hire a removal company. If you delay your buyers moving in or they have additional costs caused by moving in late you may find they want to pass the costs on.

I moved for doors down last year and I got a removal company in, so much easier.

If the move is only 16 metres away then you may find yourself in the embarrassing situation of the nearest place you'll be able to park is where you have loaded the van :o

For short distances like this it is all about the preparation No. of bodies you can muster and the time(zero if a simultaneous buy/sell) between being able to move in and having to be out.

if the ground is flat then a platform trolley or two is probably best for really heavy stuff (motorized if needed)

a sack truck for boxed up stuff

no lifting in/out of a van.
  • I think what we will do is hire a man and a van so we can be certain we have another body to help, rather than a huge removal type thing, the house is on the street behind our house so driving it is maybe longer 0.04 miles ..because it's a windy path and can't get a car let alone a van down that !

Thanks, i just wanted peoples thoughts on whether i was being OTT for wanting removals and does seem i'm not alone..I just want it to be as stress free as possible!

    That's still only 64 metres...

Rather than paying for a man plus van - especially if the van isn't actually going to be of use - why not just get some mates round, and get some beers and pizzas in. Removals plus house-warming, and far cheaper.

Because most people move house in the week and their mates are at work?
