I microwave them for ten minutes (for a really large spud) but get the RIGHT potato variety! Maris Pipers are good for baking, so are King Edwards or any spud recommended for mashing rather than salads! in other words Old potatoes! then i slit them halfway and put in a baking tin with a drizzle of oil and some salt.
hot oven and half hour later they are crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside! just remember that the more you put in microwave the more you need to increase the times! for four large spuds i put them in for about twenty minutes - but they still only need half to three quarters of hour in oven.

They are even nicer if you make garlic oil first by leaving a garlic clove in a small bowl of oil for an hour or so.

I'm going to try that next time, thanks

  • Help!

I have just spent the last 30 mins trying to make a jacket potato in the microwave, and all I have achieved is 2 wasted rock hard lumps!

I have washed the potatos, pricked them with a fork a few times, wrapped them in kitchen paper, and put them in the microwave for about 7 minutes, turning every few minutes.

However, when I thought they were soft, I cut them up and they seem to go hard. what am I doing wrong?

Beans on toast for me now, at least I would struggle to mess that up!!

when you turn them, give them a squeeze as well to break them up, a gentle squeeze like you would a fit birds !!!!, not like you're trying to kill it.

Although i've never found microwaved jackets to be great; i'd microwave for 3 minutes, turn and squeeze and back in for another 4 minutes. Then bang them in the oven so they can go all fluffy inside like a baked kitten.

I cut a cross half way through. If you imagine that when its done this will form the qtrs. Hope that makes sense.

I cook two for 10 minutes. Never have turned them part way through, didn't know you had too with microwaves and never wrapped in kitchen paper either. Never buy it, so I'd have a job :D So no idea if this helps or not.

I know it is not much use to you, but we have a Panasonic Combi that makes perfect Jacket Potatoes in 14 Min's.

Not cheap, but worth every penny if only for the Jacket Pots it makes.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

You can cook them like you did, then cut them in half - if they are hard in the middle put the halves back in for a couple more minutes.

  • I did try putting them back in for a bit longer but that made them go harder, as though it was over cooking them.

I do have an oven but after a stress day cleaning up sick and cuddling my little better I didnt even think about cooking until he was in bed, and I just wanted a quick fix!
