Perfect baked potatoes

blimey - I take em out the bag, shove in hot oven for an hour and thats it - no piercing, no rubbing, no foil. What I do rememberr reading is that to keep a crisp skin you need to let the steam escape from the hot spud asap when you take it out as thats what makes it go soggy - Nigel Slater recommending whacking them to open as soon as you take them out. Copious amounts of butter make any jacket spud great!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I'm with the above ^ i just whack em in, i used to pierce them and tried the microwave but i find they are much yummier when done like this and easier.0

Use the right variety for a start.
I've tried pre-zapping them first. This is OK, if you then coat them in oil and effectively fry the outside in the oven for just 15 - 20 minutes, which is a good "hybrid" method for getting a reasonable baked potato in a reasonable time and at a reasonable energy cost. However, it doesn't seem to make any difference if you then do them in foil for an hour.
With the all-oven method, to get them crispy on the outside, simply remove the foil after 30 minutes.
To get them softer on the inside, impaling them on a metal skewer (that's if you can find one these days) evidently does the trick, as it conducts heat into the middle. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I've just stuck them in...they turn out fine....I've tried coating in oil...they turn out even better. You soon get to know what you prefer. I think it's a matter of trial and error and personal preference..:D.0

you need good baking spuds first of all, then just wash, stab a couple of times with a knife and bung in the oven at about 180-200C for about 1.5 hourss, depending on the size. Thats all I do, and they come out lovely...jst don't forget the butter! It makes all the difference.0

Can I please have your suggestions....
I currently wash, pierce with knife 4 times and the wrap in tin foil and put in oven, for 200c for 1 hour - it is OK, nothing special, I would like it to be special, how can I make it more crispy on the outside and softer in the inside...
Thank you

I do the same as you, probably pr1ck a few more times. But after an hour & a half I take the foil off & put it back in for 10-15 mins to crisp the skin;)0 -
In a similar vein, I'd love to know how to make them in the oven the same as they turn out from the BBQ. Its a special camping / BBQ supper for us, after the main meal wrap some spuds in foil and stick them in the coals. The tastiest jackets ever. I just can't seem to replicate it at home
Any ideas?

Like others, I tend to half cook in microwave (after scrubbing and piercing), then to brush with oil and sprinkle with salt before baking for 30 mins (or till nice and crisp on outside.
They are even nicer if you make garlic oil first by leaving a garlic clove in a small bowl of oil for an hour or so.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Like JoJo I'm having jackets too. OH is going out with the lads for a curry0
