Does a dog/pup really need a jacket?

I have jack russels and when it gets cold outside, I put home made fleece jackets on them.
I cut the arms off old fleece jumpers, cut it to shape, cut out a couple of leg holes and they fit perfect. Best of, it costs nothing.0 -
I was browsing round a 99p shop the other day, & found a high visability dog coat! It's the flurescent yellow colour, & has reflective strips & little paw shapes, & fixes with velcro.
Technically, it's too small, but does tuck into his harness. And with Pippa's idea, I was thinking I could sew it onto a piece of blanket & make it fit him properly.
Could I spray it with that stuff you can get for tents or leather shoes to make it more water repellent, do you think? I don't want to poison him!Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Have you heard of that lady who makes jumpers, scarfs etc made from your own dogs fur?
Some people groom their dog, keep all the fur in a large sack and after the dog has died they get something like a cushion made from the fur of their beloved pet as keepsakes0 -
My 6 chihuahuas wear coats in the winter as their little tummies are very close to the ground. I wouldn't put a coat on them unless absolutely nescessary.Proud Mummy to Leila aged 1 whole year:j0

Must pong to high heaven. Although I did wonder if having the mutt stuffed in a standing position, either as a foot stool or occasional table, would do the trick. Functional and sentimental at the same time - what more could you ask for?:rotfl:All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

I would think that was fine once it had dried. Chewing shoes with it sprayed on doesn't seem to have done mine any harm. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I'm up in Scotland, so it's necessary for my two chihuahua's to wear a functional dog-specific coat in the winter. Would like to see any human go out here without a coat on!
There is nothing wrong with putting a coat on your dog if you see them suffering from the cold. I think it is far crueler to subject an animal to bitterly cold conditions because their owner may be too vain to be seen with a dog coat on their pet. No parent would ever send their children out in the winter without a coat on, so I don't see what the problem is when it comes to a dog that certainly feels the cold too.
Just because a dog wears a specific coat for them doesn't mean the owner likes to "dress up the dog", people should just be sensible with their pets and put the animals comfort first before their own vanity/credibility.

Because we have a 'boy', I don't think he would appreciate a pink diamonte froo-froo number:shocked: & couldn't imagine any of wanting to walk him out in it either:D
Just thinking that there could be an opening for sports themed stuff, for the males in the household to want to cover up their pet pooches without fear of ridicule......along the lines of footie clubs, rugby, F1 teams.....hmmm, perhaps I've just given away a small fortune to some enterprising sewing enthusiast!Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

I would love to have a little pet for the kids but as I mentioned in another thread, allergies are a problem so I can't.
These maine coon cats are lovely.
or a Ragdoll
hi smiley_mum, my friend is really allergic to cats too...everytime she came into the same room as my dog or another friend's cat she would start welling up and sniffling... but recently she got two kittens and some kind of shampoo to wash them in and afterwards she was fine, maybe you should try it too? worth a try if you really want a pet! :j****************************************currently love love love:
