If the overcharge is £65 presumably the bill for the multi room box was £75, instead of £10, therefore a £65 'overcharge'

As a multi room box not plugged into the phoneline (legacy system) is charged at the same rate as the main box then presumably the main box was also £75/month so £75 + £75 = £150/month just for Sky TV !!!!

Didnt your grandparents baulk at paying that every month even if they didn't remember getting the letters about the multi room box not being connected to the phone line ?

TBH even £85 /month , presumably the amount they were 'happy' to pay Sky for their TV pack on the main box and 1 multi room seems to me a huge monthly outlay just for TV

Unfortunately Sky do (did) state that you had to keep all boxes connected to the phone line to benefit from a multi room subscription, so they could check that both boxes were connected at the same address by checking the CLI info from the phoneline when the boxes called back into Sky, obviously if one box stopped calling, it could be it was moved to another address and that address got £75 worth of TV for £10.

When Sky installed the multi room box they would have also provided a phone extension socket for the multi room box and plugged it in, so why did they unplug it ?

I normally would defend a consumer against a faceless corporation, especially one like Sky, but in this case , on the face of it , a £200 gesture of goodwill may have to be good enough, presumably they could have offered nothing at all and just referred you to the T&C's

What do you mean by old ? A number of us on here are OAPs and easily sort out our accounts, including a good discount. 'Old' doesn't mean incapable and even some young people lose out because haggling is too much trouble.

I'm about to leave on Saturday and won't return unless they offer me another good bribe (atm 755 off plus £100 credit).

Not necessarily true; my s-i-l had "difficulties" with Sky a few years ago, over his multiroom box because the installer had NOT set up a 2nd phone socket- and Sky refused to send a fitter out to fit one after the event -he had to phone up every so often to get the charges removed.:(
  • Was it paid by direct debit? Maybe take it up with the bank. We reclaimed £1000 in overcharged gym membership this way.

The bank won't be interested as despite the title of the thread they weren't 'overcharged'.

I have to agree with what everyone else has said and this is one painful and expensive lesson to learn. But there may be one recourse -

Do both your grandparents have (and sorry for putting it this way) any mental issues such as dementia? If not then its as others have said.

I mentioned that they might be deemed "vulnerable adults" earlier.
However,as per the title of the thread, the original charge for a non-connected Multi-Room box started in 2006.

It's unlikely either of them have suffered from any Dementia or related illness for all that time..

I agree, but £11,500 in penalties is worth exploring any and all possibilities, if possible. Though I agree doubtful.
  • get a solicitor involved. you will need to fight this legally to get money from them. sky aren't going to refund you these amounts just over a few phone calls.
