So let me get this right. . .
People are reporting posts on behalf of people who are offended by other people's posts. . .

As a "for instance", some folk are apparently doing their nut because of a baker's advent calendar.....

    https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/greggs-forced-to-apologise-after-replacing-baby-jesus-with-sausage-roll-in-advent-calendar-a3691566.html

Seems perfectly reasonable advertising campaignn to me - quite funny really.... "wise men" worshipping a sausage roll is probably a bit of a wry comment, given that some folks clearly love that particular brand of sausage rolls..... :D

Given the obesity problem in the UK, it could be argued that sausage rolls are more popular than the religious figure being parodied ;) .

Now, is anyone seriously suggesting that gangs of rampaging Christians are now obliged to burn down branches of the particular baker, murder it's staff etc?

    WR

As a Christian I find that quite funny, I won't be unpacking my AK47 just yet ;)

I find the Morrison's claim in its adverts to 'make Christmas' more annoying for being so ridiculously pompous.

Certainly free speech has been lost in many ways, I had to remove my employer status and de-friend anyone from work on Facebook as it was too dangerous, should I simply 'like' posts supporting traditional marriage I could be fired.

No-one is stopping you believing or saying those things. Free speech =/= freedom from criticism.

I've just watch the lunchtime news on the BBC and seen some of the posters scrawls that some of the Australian community have done. This is re the vote on same sex marriage.
    Burn Churches
    Bash Bigots
    Crucify 'No' Voters
    What delightful people.

I really don't see why people who don't 'agree or like' something should not have the freedom to do so, without being called a bigot.

Even worse than erosion of free speech is the new fad of trial by media and being presumed guilty until proven innocent.

DT is often very hostile, but we all know and expect that. Demanding a calm, reasoned debate in here is like going into a clothes shop and demanding sausages. Maybe it would make more sense to go to a butcher instead?

DT has more porkies than a butchers.

In terms of this particular corner of debate...

I think it's worth remembering that MSE is a site about saving money. As the mods explained to me when I asked why a completely inoffensive post of mine was removed, they only have so many mods and so much time, so they choose to devote that time primarily to the money-related parts of the forums, since that's what the site is actually for. This means that they'll often just delete something in the non-money-related parts of the forum without looking very deeply into it if they've received complaints about it or if it potentially puts them at risk of legal problems (hence the missing threads about the missing girl).

If you want an unmoderated debate, you may be better finding (or creating) another forum where anything goes. If you want to express views that many strongly disagree with without receiving a negative response, then you need to seek out a forum for people who share those views. It depends on what your goal is.

DT is often very hostile, but we all know and expect that. Demanding a calm, reasoned debate in here is like going into a clothes shop and demanding sausages. Maybe it would make more sense to go to a butcher instead?

Anyone who has ever participated in unmoderated debate will be grateful for the moderation on here. Its not about free speech, its simply about keeping things civilised.

Yes, I have also seen things along those lines.

They have been very disparaging about those that voted no.

As I see it they should just be happy that the vote was yes.

Compared to the 'Misc' forum of a certain other money saving website, DT is a haven of tolerance and logic.
  • I think when someone declares that something is "wrong" they need to provide some justification for that.

I think immigration should be reviewed and controlled because of long-term consequences for our environment, economy and cultural cohesion. Not because I "just don't like it".

I find objections to say, gay marriage, puzzling because I just don't understand them. It's not enough to say "it isn't right", you have to show evidence for negative repurcussions eg:

No gay marriage = many law abiding citizens financially and legally penalised for loving each other.
Gay marriage = what exactly? Who on earth is affected in any way by the legal status of the two blokes living next door?

And why get hot and bothered about gender neutral bogs. Surely a much bigger issue is why there aren't more free, clean public toilets available. Or that what we flush down them causes real pollution problems on beaches and further out.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

    .

Now if the 'no' voters tried to overturn the 'yes' vote - you know, like some of the EU referendum remain vote losers are trying to do with the referendum result.
Well, they'd have something to complain about.
