Can you freeze Homemade mashed potato?
I’ve seen in the supermarket that McCain and other brands do ready-made mashed potato and the instructions on the packaging say it’s freezable. I’ve tried it a couple of times when it’s been in the reduced bay but at full price I leave it. It’d be so much cheaper if I could freeze my own, is it possible? I usually boil the potatoes well, add a little butter & a splash of milk and then mash. Would this method work? Do I need to add certain things to freeze potato?
Advice would be very welcome. Thanks in advance

Yes, mash is easily freezable. Look in the frozen ready meals section under shepherds/ cottage / fish pie if you need further !!!!!!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I use an ice cream scoop to open freeze on an oven tray or similar then bag up in freezer bags . Just take out as many as needed .

rather than cook mash when I need it, I cook extra and freeze, easily defrosted tooI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Yes you can freeze HM mash. It is perfect when defrosted.
I would just say that instead of adding milk etc before freezing, just mash it with a little (real) butter and freeze like that. Add more butter/salt/cream/milk after defrosting. Too much liquid can make them a bit sludgy when defrosted.
Scoops of mash open frozen are great too as pollyanna said above.
Just trial and error from me. Other than that it's perfect.0 -
I agree with melanza . Real butter no milk when freezing . Add milk if needed when reheating .

Agree with the butter - no milk mentioned by other posters. I freeze mine in 1/2 cup portions, flatten/shape and wrap individually then freeze. If you freeze it in sort of rectangles it can be placed on top of a cottage pie etc. without defrosting;). I seldom have enough space to open freeze it.0

I was always a bit dubious about freezing mash, but with a 5kg bag full of spare spuds thought I'd give it a try. I use butter and seasoning but not milk, will also cook up last chance carrots with the spuds and mash them in. Works so well, my secret is to freeze it in a foil tray that is the same size as my pyrex dish, so if I want a cottage pie I just need to upturn the mash sandcastle-esque on top of the mince...job's a good 'un!0
