I have never thought of freezing mash on its own, but have used frozen on top of veggie cottage pie dishes.I will give frozen mash a try next time I have potatoes that need using up.

Oh and for Christmas preppers. You do know you can parboil your spuds for roasting and then open freeze and bag up?

    I knew you did!

I just roll the barboiled in a bit of goose fat, not too much though, and freeze, and then straight in to the oven on the day with a bit more. Can never have too much goose fat IMO!

Just shake the spuds and leave for a bit to cool before putting the goose fat on. and if you are a worrier, the parboiled spuds can look a little grey. Yikes! but they lose all that when being roasted.

Just might help with the Christmas prep!

I'm afraid I am the lazy one. I find it a lot easier to buy a portion of mashed potatoes from Morrisons for about a pound and stick it in the freezer until needed. It takes about 5 mins in the microwave from frozen, resting it and stirring it in between. So I think that home frozen would be the same.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

  • Hi,

boil a good sized pot of potatoes with carrot, parsnip, turnip/swede, sweet potato, any root vegetable of choice.

Mash, add mustard or horseradish to jazz it up a bit, portion and freeze.

Lot cheaper than paying £1 a tray in supermarket.

I do pig pans of mash, I often have 2 on the go at the same time.
Then I mash and freeze in containers for 2 people.

I add a small amount of butter or olive spread, then when I get some out i can add extra.
I use less butter/spread when I'm doing a pie topping to when I'm doing mash with, say, bangers.

At Christmas I do this as we like just a taste of mash on Christmas Day as ther's so much other stuff to eat.
I use an ice cream scoop to open freeze on an oven tray or similar then bag up in freezer bags . Just take out as many as needed .

I do this but don't mix with potato before freezing as I find carrot and swede quite watery when it's been frozen & thawed and like to squeeze it out before combining with the potato.

Makes a fab topping to a shepherds pie though, especially pork, chicken or turkey.
  • Thank you so much everyone!

you've answered my query with so many alternative ways of freezing it. I'm going to now give it a try.

    thanks again everyone
