Frankly, it's probably not worth bothering unless you buy a system that produces high resolution pictures in the dark. A colour camera won't hack it so you'll need a b&w system with a good lens and high intensity infra-red lighting.

There's no apostrophe in "theirs". It's a possessive pronoun and doesn't require one.

    Why so negative?

Actually, the cameras I linked to are 380 line devices and the resolution they provide - bearing in mind they are designed for this purpose - is very good. Most CCTV footage is not intended for HDTV broadcasting anyway.

On top of that, the company I linked to also provides professional cameras at 420 lines (and they're still cheap at £35).

Lewt, the Maplin device has external event trigger capabilities so yes it can feasibly be set to record when there is activity.

You don't need to get anyone in for this unless you really aren't up to mounting the camera and plugging a few cables in as if you'd bought a new video or hi-fi system. All you need is the Maplin recorder and a camera, plus a cable (and whatever fiddling to get it to trigger on external events). Job done.

Night-vision CCTV cameras ARE cheap if you go to the right place. This is one example. And this one has a 45m IR range on it. Both are under £40.

Trust me, Lewt. I've done it. It is easy. It is cheap. It will do what you are after.

If you mount it behind glass be aware that you will get a reflection from the IR, so angle it carefully. It IS best if it's outside - and it really isn't that big: the neighbours wouldn't notice it if you positioned it carefully.

That HDD is too expensive. Look on eBuyer instead - like this one: twice the capacity and not far off half the price (exaggeration).

Yes, that system will do what you want. The cable will probably be RCA-to-BNC (you can get RCS-to-BNC adapter plugs if you only have RCA-to-RCA cables. Maplin sell them (cables and adapters).

No. Not according to the spec. But you could add your own camera (as long as the connections are there).
