Well no crash today on the 20th anniversary of black wednesday
Black Wednesday was in September 1992 (15 years ago )
Black Monday was in October 1987 ( 20 years ago )'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
No sign of the DOW falling the 3000 points it'd take for it to really match the 23% drop on Black Monday.0

Seems a bit of a anticlimax.
Banks got hammered, overall downer but no huge loss. My shares on average were down 3% over today.
Safe for another year perhaps? as if its going to happen its most likely in october when people are cashing in after ex-divs, xmas presents or funds taking profits for income funds. Should be strong again in jan when all the reports are issued and all the city bonus' get plugged in.
BP only lost 1% despite the profit warning last week.0 -
One thing is certain: the ECB, the BofE and the Fed are all going to cut (OK, three things).BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

I agree too, 8th nov - 5.5%
But i wish they didnt cut it because...
-being a economically active citizen my personal interest rate according to the office of national statistics is 8% and inflation means im worth less.
-student loan will remain higher rates (as linked to inflation not base rates)
-my mortgage is fixed at 4.5% for many many years.
.. they are basically bailing out the careless fools at my expensive via stealth tax
plainly not fair, damn socialists 0 -
^"[SIZE=+2]A fool and his money are soon parted" - not when the BofE are in charge...Savings rates coming down soon from 6.70% I would think.

Gordon Brown was chancellor when the biggest stockmarket crash since the 1970s occured.
Not so. It was a prolonged decline not a crash. Big difference! His taxation policy has been accused of making the UK stockmarket one of the weakest performers in the Western world and the FTSE100 is estimated to be 1000 points lower than it would have been under previous policies.
1000 points lower? Whose crystal ball did that come from? :rotfl:He inherited an economy that was well positioned by the previous Govt, got lucky with global growth, global cheap borrowing and global low interest rates.
This has gained mythical status among Tory supporters grasping for anything from the last regime to shout about. Tory policies inherently brought about reckless boom and bust economies and we were simply on the up towards another bust after they disgracefully left interest rates artificially low before the election in the hope of conning the public. After their defeat the BOE was forced to raise interest rates a number of times to halt inflation and stop recession.Lets measure his ability once the hangover after the good times has had time to bite. That shouldnt be long now that property prices are starting to fall, credit is not so easy or cheap to get and inflation pressures still exist.
Well he is not even Chancellor now but due to his running of the economy we are a far more stable economy than many of our competitors.
I have no dog in the political arena but GB is better than anyone the Tories have, though reading your posts i suspect you may have an allegiance to the Tories that perhaps clouds your judgement?0 -
Boom and bust in economics is a certainty and will always exist angelus, the trick is ensuring the population dont notice that its happening! Give them booze, gambling, fags and lottery tickets and then there are no riots!
The bull always rages ahead on a whim and is always stopped by one factor or another.0 -
