There will need to be beading but the fitters workmanship looks poor - why did they use white beading, a matching oak would look a lot better and the mitre joint is poor.

I'd get onto the fitters and get them to replace the beading with matching oak and do a better job of the joint.

You can also get different profile beading, so might want a flat type to blend in more.

Would matte black beading also look okay?

I agree with the others that this looks ridiculous. I also get the impression that the beading is secured to the floor, rather than the hearth, which totally defeats the purpose of having it in the first place, as it will prevent the floor sliding when it expands.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Yep, that's a terrible job, can see why you're unhappy.

Get him back and show him the photos of what it looked like before, ask him why on earth is he use white beading (!!!) instead of one that matches the ,aminate and he's got to make it right himself.

Did he paint the beading white because there are white smudges over the laminate around it?

  • Many thanks for all your responses. Glad to see I am not being pain in the !!!.

He did not paint it. Not sure about smudges I assumed it is either glue or caulk.

I am getting the guy back in to fix some other things anyway. If you think above photos are bad you should see some other examples of his workmanship.

I was just wondering if it would be reasonable to complain about the beading around hearth. However I am still not sure what he would need to do to achieve standard like before. I may be really strange but I really dislike beading around the hearth and would be very keen to achieve effect as with old floor.

The hearth looks like it is on top of the original flooring so you would expect him to bead around the hearth, however he has done a poor job.
A matt black trim, properly mitred would be best
  • This exactly what the guy told me but then I am wondering how the old flooring was fitted? I mean the old laminate flooring was fitted on exactly the same original floorboards as the new one. So I wonder how it was done previously. Would I need to lift hearth install new laminate floor and then put it back? Obviously too late to do anything now but wondering for the future.

Did you have any extra underlay put in? Does the hearth 'step'?

It may just be he couldn't measure properly and looking at that job, I'm not surprised.

The new flooring goes the other way right? |||| Vs _ (can't do more than one there!), unless your photos are from different angles!

Due to movement that means lot's of different boards on the long part of the hearth and definatly needs beading unless you can put up with a non straight edge.

But yes it looks like he did not expect to need beading and found some in a skip. Also The glue (or whatever, but I suspect glue since the poorly mitred edges are not filled in) should have been cleaned up. very poor job.
