I have had one of those days when I wish I had stayed in bed reading !

My fancy kitchen tap has been leaking for ages and its really not possible to just change washers like you could in the 'good old days'. DH decided he could change it (he fitted the old one so we were not expecting any problems) and we started this morning at about 10 am -and we have only just finished the bloody thing !

Nothing went to plan as when we tried to turn off the hot and coldfeed under the sink the stop tap for the hot feed seized up and we couldn't shut the hot water off (in fact it wouldn't turn on again either ) . So we couldn't remove the old tap. The hot water feed comes in from a fortic tank upstairs - and we couldn't turn the feed off from up there either. We couldn't get at the water inlet stop tap either so we couldn't isolate anything. I had to get up on the top shelf of the airing cupboard, prise the lid off the tank ( and I only had about 6 " of head room) and tie the ball valve up - not easy in such limited space. DH is 88 and not very flexible so he couldn't get up there at all - and I was terrified as there were a few cobwebs and I have a dreadful spider phobia.

Then we couldn't drain the tank down far enough from the kitchen as the seized up stop tap was hardly letting any water through. We couldn't disconnect the pipes under the sink because they were not flexible and there was no way to catch any of the water that would have shot out.

So we had to pull out the washing machine and dishwasher and drain the upstairs tank from behind them. Much cursing and swearing went on ! Then we had extreme difficulty in disconnecting and replacing the seized up stop tap and getting a new one on - again, very limited space and involved me wedging myself in the undersink cupboard. It was also extremely hard to actually disconnect the old tap under the sink and even harder to fix the new one in place. I won't mention the various leaking joints that had to be unscrewed and packed with plumbers tape.

We put the dishwasher etc back in place and dried all the various wet areas where water had shot out where it shouldn't and untied the ball valve to let the tank refill. And it appears that I managed to bend the arm of the ball valve up a bit when I tied it up and now the perishing think is letting a bit too much water in and the overflow is now running !!! On DH's instructions I have struggled to bend the arm down a bit but its absolutely rigid and I cannot manage to straight it out - at the moment its got a slight upward kink and the ball valve is a tiny bit to high .Its all very well DH telling me to press it down but I am afraid of breaking the darn float

Anyway, he's gone off to have a shower and I think I will have a large glass of wine. I can't put anything back in any of the cupboards until we are sure nothing is leaking and we will he to fiddle with the ball valve tomorrow - I have had enough today.

At least it stopped me spending several hours attacking my ironing mountain.Around 8.5 hours on what should have been a simple job.

Think you'll be having more than a glass.
    What a day.
    Hope it's sorted.
My simple jobs seem to end up escalating like that as well......
