Halfords, a new low!

  • I don’t think you can complain about Halfords in this case, they are doing what they do. It is the reason I avoid them , Kwikfit etc.
It’s happened, your wife made the wrong choice but the bulbs will probably last years. If one ever does blow, you can change it back to normal bulbs yourself for less than the price of one of the fancy ones.
    Life’s too short
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

Perhaps in future show your wife where your nearest car parts shop is?

    Buy the bulbs and
    1) Youtube how to change the bulb ... (Our headlight bulbs are tricky to change but the main beams are doable, the side lights needs tools that even my tiny hands can't get into)
    2) If she / you really can't change them then buy the bulb and go to a garage. If you are lucky enough they might change it for free, our local garage does.

This method has meant I've only ever paid about £6 for a new bulb and fitting.

Also, while you are empowering your wife - show her how to change windscreen wipers, how to change fluids, check tire pressure, treads and if she's feeling up to it how to change tyres.

Good heavens! empowering a woman, you clearly have not thought that through

  • In the grand scheme of things, the cost of the perceived overcharge is not going to be worth the hours of aggravation of following through a complaint which is likely to go nowhere for reasons discussed.

I'd stick to "Please don't go to Halfords, they are trained to upsell and you'll end up paying more than you need. But thanks for sorting out the problem anyway." and have the satisfaction of never darkening their doors again. I have quite a long list of places I refuse to spend money at, and it makes me feel better for it.

I'd rather have my wife driving a roadworthy car, than worrying over a few quid. You can soon lose that difference in a couple of drinks in Paris anyway.

    Why not?

They can be very reasonable on some things. I wanted some specific polishing pads for the car and after a lot of searching Halfords were cheaper than I could have got anywhere online with the added benefit I could drive there and pick them up without having to wait for delivery.

Admittedly this isn't the case for everything but your sweeping statement is a bit ridiculous.
  • You change both at the same because if the one has failed the other is not far behind (assuming they were fitted in pairs previously) and an ultra bright fitted on its own with a normal cheap manufacturers one will be visually different and therefore will look odd as will have a different beam colour and brightness.

It is what it is. Hate to say it but alfuds have done nothing wrong.

The £8 fitting is per bulb, so they charged correctly.

The BOGOF is only on the brighter and whiter bulbs, you sure you could have got one of those for £10 at Halfords? I've just checked their website and the cheapest BOGOF one I could see (albeit for my vehicle) was £17.
And that price is a bargain.I m fairly handy with mechanics but I recently changed the dip bulb on the front headlamp. It was an absolute pain to get too and even harder to wriggle the bulb into the correct place.
It used to be a 2 minute job anyone could do but I guarantee you the average Joe would struggle and fret over this job.
Modern cars are so packed tight there is no room at all on some makes..eg Vauxhall Corsa D s you have to remove other stuff, and have the correct Torx bit just to get near the bulbs. 8 quid is a bargain.. I will let halfords do the nearside one for me next time
  • That's why I like the set up on some Volvo cars. (the V50 for example).
All you need to do is to slide out a securing rod then the whole headlight assembly can be pulled forward and free of the car body.
It only takes a few seconds to change the bulbs.

Based on what? Their Pro range of tools have a better guarantee than Snap On or MAC Tools, are of as good quality and are regularly on 50% discount. Having a trade card the cost of parts for me is ridiculously cheap, far cheaper than my local motoring discount shop.

Now I'm sure this hasn't happened, but you have to be careful with 'extra bright' bulbs. Some are just genuinely better bulbs, but others are actually higher rated and add extra load onto the electrical system. The box will be marked "FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY"
