They sold her "extra bright" bulbs at £25 each, so she did get 2 for £25, and promptly told her that they recommend replacing both at the same time. So 2 x £8 fitting charge now.

Correct, you do want to be changing both at the same time if the other one isn't already an ultra bright because you end up with one half of the beam spread being considerably dimmer if you don't which is quite distracting.

Do you have the capabilities to change the bulbs yourself? If not then don't complain about paying a fitting charge. £16 to fit two bulbs is quite cheap given my local main dealer would want around £25 in labour for the time it took to do my Mondeo or £100 for the time it would take to do my MX5.

You're saying she didn't want them and that they lied to her. Are you saying you think your wife is stupid? Certainly seems to be the tone of your post.

Try the CAB as you can no longer go straight to TS.

This may vary around the country, but it is certainly not the case where I am.

    That's because you're in Scotland.

It's universal in England and, I think, Wales.

Screwfix have a replacement bulb kit for £4.99, not much help for the op but might be useful for others to keep in the car to save paying top dollar if you need one quick and are able or have someone to fit it.

So your wife got her light fixed, and having decided to get a superior bulb, then made the correct decision to change the other one so she had a matched pair. You get back and make her feel like she is an idiot for doing this.

Wonder if Halfords do any deals on swapping out your old husband for a brighter version :)

Why not write to both? They all need a laugh.
  • So are you complaining about halfords that sold your wife some bulbs, or your wife because she made a decision that was not in line with your obviously superior judgement?

I'm very disappointed with this thread. When I saw the title about "a new low" I was expecting to read that Halfords had used slave labour, or trained orphans and fed them on stale bread, or had tortured little kittens.

I didn't realise what "a new low" actually was, so thanks OP for clarifying.
  • Perhaps in future show your wife where your nearest car parts shop is?

    Buy the bulbs and
    1) Youtube how to change the bulb ... (Our headlight bulbs are tricky to change but the main beams are doable, the side lights needs tools that even my tiny hands can't get into)
    2) If she / you really can't change them then buy the bulb and go to a garage. If you are lucky enough they might change it for free, our local garage does.

This method has meant I've only ever paid about £6 for a new bulb and fitting.

Also, while you are empowering your wife - show her how to change windscreen wipers, how to change fluids, check tire pressure, treads and if she's feeling up to it how to change tyres.
