As I found out today, no! I always clear history too but twitter for example, not app but visited via Chrome, was storing 12mb of data.

Although not everything can be moved or deleted, there is quite a bit you can do to keep things under control. A previous poster is right though, apps do just get bigger naturally over time.

I'd double check your default storage is set to SD card and not internal storage.

Thanks, some good ideas here. Some apps can only be disabled and some cant be moved to the sd card. Even those that can dont fully go across. I woud have to try the app someone suggested to deal with this i guess.

*Jedi voice*: Apps2SD is the app you're looking for. :p

All you need to do is:

    1. Root your phone. (Ask if you don't understand anything.)
    2. Backup everything on the SD card to your PC.
    3. Install Apps2SD. (The following steps are done via the app menu.)
    4. Repartition the SD card so it has the original type of partition (FAT32) and a new system partition (F2FS).
    5. Create a mount script (you should be prompted to do this automatically).

And that's it. Then you can use the options in the app to move every last remnant of any app to the SD card, leaving nothing on your phone's memory other than a tiny link file (like a shortcut in Windows).

Be careful with system apps. Don't move or delete any app if you don't know what it does, and it's probably common sense not to move vital stuff like the phone dialler app to the SD card.

If you don't like how it works, move the apps back to the internal storage, delete the mount script, backup and repartition the SD card and everything's as it was.

BTW, you don't need to know what FAT32 or F2FS or mount scripts are. You just select the options in a menu. It's pretty straightforward if you can ignore the many other options that aren't relevant.

Mind you the two key Facebook apps have the same issue, taking up obscene amount of space between them and, for some reason they take ages to install and update. In fact I got rid of them in the end as I was fed up of waiting ten minutes for each update...

I've recently removed Facebook and Facebook Messenger for the same reasons.

In their place I've installed the official Facebook Lite app which covers the basic Messenger features too.

Unfortunately Facebook Lite isn't available from the Google Play store in the UK but can be installed perfectly safely and quite easily using the following guide:
    https://www.howtogeek.com/305081/how-to-install-facebook-lite-and-messenger-lite-on-android-in-any-country/

The actual software is downloaded from here:
    https://www.apkmirror.com/uploads/?q=lite

I used the latest non-beta version. Updates have to be manually done periodically too because the software didn't come from the Google Play Store.

I tried deleting apps and then going to play store to install them again. This seemed like a good idea because an app that was over 100mb was as little as 40mb from the store. What happened though is in a matter of seconds the app returned to the size it had been. How it managed to restore all that data when it had been wiped from the phone i dont know.

i recently uninstalled Facebook and its messenger from my phone and was surprised to see how much extra space it gave me.

Im not planning on reinstalling it.

Have a look at Facebook Lite - it takes up very little space and uses little data.

    See #24.

Is it the app that's 100MB, or the app is 40MB and has 60MB of data/cached files that aren't removed when you uninstall the app?

Maybe you could re-install the app, delete the cache/data, uninstall, and free up some space...?

I deleted all app data before removing the app.
  • I use Clean Master frequently, cleans out 100's of MB of junk, seems a good app, try it, then just uninstall it, if you want to.
