Purchasing a new sofa - advise

Hi all,

My wife and I are moving into our new house soon and went sofa shopping a few days ago. I cannot believe the prices of these things. We went to SCS, Harveys, Dwell, DFS and most were quoted around £2500 to £3000 (even with a discounted sale price). I know nothing about sofas, but I only expected to pay around £1000

We are looking for a leather corner sofa (not one of the supersized ones) and a 2 seather.

Can anyone give us any advise or tips on how to buy a sofa?

I have read previous threads and am not sure if waiting for the xmas sales will make a difference

To be honest I really doubt you will get a leather corner sofa and a 2 seater sofa for £1000.

I paid £1000 for a leather sofa on its own, bear in mind that you want it to be decent leather that will last and not a cheapie one.

  • You can definitely get a corner sofa for £700 and a 2 seater for £300 BUT they won't be 100% leather. You could get one of the various leather effects which are actually getting pretty good these days if you pick a decent one that comes with some sort of guarantee. (or purchase an extended warranty on it for peace of mind if you're concerned)

And I'd look in different places to the ones you already have. Google "cheap leather sofas" or something and see what's online rather than a big brand in store with large overheads and marketing budgets.

The person above me is right in saying you won't get something at £1000 that lasts as long as £2000 but if you only have £1000 to spend... then you only have £1000 to spend
