But a foot operated clutch is a manually operated clutch.
If the driver can operate the clutch with a foot, a hand or a finger (or any other body part) then the clutch is manually operated.

Manual in my dictionary = done with the hand(s)

Manual relates to the hand, pedal to the foot. Thats why the law provides for both "clutch pedal" and "lever which he may operate manually".

The earlier definition said or not and.

A hand operated clutch would make it a manual.

Not arguing but i believe that with Jaguar,s you can drive the auto as a manual,ie change gear manually but still has no clutch pedal:rotfl:
    Haven't I already stated that.

It would have had a fully auto option as well, I think.

Depending on the model it's often referred to as the 'A' button.

To be honest i did not notice, the track day was a present for my 65th birthday, getting into a modern high powered sports car was fun, finding out it had no clutch was an eye opener, keeping it on the track was something else:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

It wasn't trying to be clever, I was simply clarifying that it's the lack of a manually operated clutch, rather than automatic gear changing, that makes it an automatic, in reference to a driving licence. As we've all posted, there are plenty of examples of how you can manually change gears, or should I say give an instruction for a gear change, in an auto.
But that's not actually what you wrote, which did not cover clutchless drive like an old sloppy box auto.

Anyhow, it is pretty confusing these days, but nearly all autos have manual gear selection override which is a fundamental part of the correct operation of an auto box - DAF variomatics being a notable exception. The dual clutch autos aren't as radically different as people might think, it's more marketing in selling them emphasising the manual gear selection.
