Your post says they will make sure it is road legal, but they won’t do an hpi check or valet or service
Guess if you want those three things done by them you would have to pay the £99

What percentage of the purchase price is £99

There is not a mission they valet it, service it and HPI it for this £99 "fee". Its purely an admin fee "con" they use.

The salesman is using smoke and mirrors to get you to pay the "admin" fee.

Oh and an HPI check is to protect THEM not the customer and costs them around £2.50, probably less, per car.

They cant legally sell a car thats not road legal, so they have to check it.

    I don't think that's fair.
If the OP wants those 3 things he pays the £99. If he doesn't he doesn't have to.

They'd surely have HPI checked the car when they bought it so that is fairly meaningless unless the OP wants confirmation of that.

£99 to service a car sounds a good price to me. My last service was £230!

I've brought a car from them it wasn't serviced. I think you will find it will need to be serviced most of their cars are due a service.

You missed my point - the dealer HAS to make sure the car is road legal, they shouldnt be charging extra for that. The dealer HAS to make sure the car is free from finance / as described, they shouldnt be charging extra for that - they are legally obliged to do this as a matter of course.

The servicing? I'd be surprised if they're really truly including a service in that £99 price. If they are its a cheap oil and filter change at very best, not what you'd have got for your £230

And if it is all that, why call it an "admin fee"? Surely its a "servicing deal" or "preparation pack"? Admin is pushing paper about and filling in forms, NOT servicing a car.

    Naughty naughty Nikki!

I'd expect an official response to at least use correct grammar and punctuation, just reinforces the cowboy image if not. I'd also expect an official representative to seek the required permission from MSE rather than what looks like the office junior creating an account to defend the ridiculous charge.

Care to try again, properly this time?

If the car is marked up as "take away today" then i would assume its already had a service and valet etc ?

Many of these places charge a £99 Admin fee, most its just to run your debit card through the machine and fill out the V5, Expensive bit of admin if you ask me
  • Hi Folks,

Thank you all for your input below. To confirm; the preparation fee is optional as stated at the footer of our homepage, this does indeed cover a service if required, HPI, PDI and valet.

    Thanks
    Nikki (on behalf of Motorpoint)

So if the "preparation fee" covers the cost of a pre-delivery inspection, why then does your "same day driveaway" state that a PDI has already been carried out for all cars on display?
    https://www.motorpoint.co.uk/samedaydriveaway
How does our Same Day Driveaway work?

Every car on display has received a 40-point Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI), which means that once all of the paper work has been completed and a further Pre-Delivery Check (PDC) done, your car is available to drive away that day. Don't forget we provide a full part-exchange valuation service if you are thinking of trading in your existing car.
It doesn't really instill confidence in a company if someone representing them states something that disagrees with what is on the company website.

No connection with Motorpoint, but it's maybe worth looking at the actual end price, as they are usually pretty much good value.

As an alternative, you could buy a similar vehicle, at auction, to 'save' money.

You'd need to loose a day off from your holiday/work, cost of getting to an auction centre, finding a suitable vehicle, getting it delivered home (you probably wont have sorted formalitites to have it road legal, straight away) preparing it to retail condition, service, valet, body repairs, applying a warranty....but you MIGHT have paid 'trade' money for it. Plus HUGE auction fees, in addition to the selling price.

So if you don't like the way the dealer markets his stock...there are other options. But might be more expensive.

Or, how about Motorpoint just include the £99 fee as part of the sticker price of their cars and carry out whatever preparation they consider necessary to sell the car. This just strikes me as a way of dropping the sticker price by £99 to come out cheaper in Autotrader searches.
