Test driving this tomorrow with the Mrs, she needs a car replacement now that her old Peugeout is dead (thank God!)

Does anyone here own one, or know anyone that does? We like the spec, reviews seem to be decent as well, anything to be aware of etc?

We're also test driving a Golf on Saturday, its a good bit cheaper, but maybe not as exciting.

Any other cars worth thinking about? Has to be a hatchback with 5 doors. She wont drive a saloon car.

The 2.0TD is notorious for timing chain failures, literally costing £,£££s. I think the petrol variant has issues too.

My son ran one from somthing like 50,000 to 84,000. The trick is to service them every 10,000 miles, not the nigh on 20,000 that BMW suggest, and check them literally weekly for oil usage and top up as necessary.

Whats your budget and what variant are you thinking of? eg, 116d, 118d, 120d, 123d?

What age of one are you looking at?

120D M Sport, 180 BHP. It is gorgeous!

Budget is about £13-15k. The one we are looking at is the 2014 model and low miles. I would service the car every 10,000 anyway, 10-15k miles would probably be about her years driving also...although if I drive it on occasion, then it will be more

2014 MY is unlikely have timing chain issues. it was mostly 2006 - 2009 years. I have had a 2011 model for the last 4 years and apart from an appetite for batteries its been fine.
Its been serviced every 10k though as motorguy suggests.

First port of call for any used car.

From my experience the 1 series has almost unuseable rear seats. A friend had one and we had to use my B class when four of us went out. No way two of us could get in the back.

My son loved his. It was a great car. It took 30,000+ of hard driven miles and never needed a penny spent on it other than routine maintenance.

Yes, get it serviced every 10,000 miles, and check the oil level weekly and top up when required.

Being just three years old it will have had one MOT at most but i guess worth checking if there was anything noted on the MOT.

Theres not a world of room in the back of the previous model ones but they're fine. This will be the later model car so should reasonable. Not a world of room but not bad.

A B Class is more of a small people carrier so you're going to get a lot more room.

the M sport has "staggered" wheels so you cannot swap tyres front to back to even wear and get best value out of them.
Sport and SE version do not.
To me the 1 series 2.0d Msport is just a tarted up diesel hatch

They are a nice car to drive but when I test drove equivalent Golf, A3 and 1 series back to back I rated the A3 well above the other 2 with the 120 xdrive 2nd. The Golf to me just didn't feel quality.
1 series is RWD so if you encounter snow and ice you and your wife may find it more challenging to drive.
BABY BMW forum may be worth a look.

If it is indeed the xDrive model then it's a very good car to drive, I had one for 3 years before chopping it in for a new RWD only model, would've gone for the xDrive again except it now only comes as an auto. Is it a BMW main dealer selling the car?
