Jackie, I going to guess (and apologies if I'm wrong) that you took the Old Priest Grade Road which is dodgy. The New Priest Grade Road (CA120) isn't so bad.

I believe you are correct. It's the only road I've ever been on that has a sign warning you to turn the car's aircon off as it reduces power to the engine
It was very scenic thogh, at least what I could see through the gaps between my fingers

Further down the coast San Luis Obispo is another lovely town - we stayed at the slightly bonkers Madonna Inn http://www.madonnainn.com/ Every room has a different theme, it has a popular (if expensive) restaurant and the pool is lovely. San Luis has some realy interesting independant restuarants - it's on my list of places to spend more time in when we next visit.
We also stayed here it was different, but yes, expensive.......0 -
I think we are set on bakersfield as the hotels seem cheap as it was only going to be a sleep stop prior to moving on to LALive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0

You'll probably get a better deal and a more pleasant stay at a motel on the outskirts than somewhere in the town centre.I think we are set on bakersfield as the hotels seem cheap as it was only going to be a sleep stop prior to moving on to LA
I'd also advise scouting the area using StreetView mode of Google Maps."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0 -
my other half much prefers hotels and ive found a few very well reviewed chain hotels with free parking and breakfast thrown in for about £100 a night so I think we will stick with themLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0

scrub that after having a read up about bakersfield i now understand why the hotel were so reasonable so ive now booked a night in cambria, which looks lovely.
Now i just have to find a hotel for LA, and San DiegoLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
