Maybe I'm missing something in all the posts.
I'm sure someone will say no, but it's an accident from a lodger the LL knew about. Why is the landlord not sorting this out?0 -

OP; just to throw another opinion to the mix, your financial loss is the LL's excess (which they can either swallow or pass to you, if the latter you can pass to your logder) and nothing more.
You can't withhold a deposit without justification, which will need to be presented when the tenant raises a dispute if you withheld their deposit.0
