As above, I have Win 7 Pro which I understand is 64 bit but the Epson scanner definitely worked on it until a couple of months ago, I have the scanned in slides, using the Epson scanner and its slide software, as proof.

Just curious on this issue Littlerock, but the 3170 was released in 2004 was it not? I would think it's given up the ghost by now having served you well all this time.

But if you want to give it one less try then use XP Mode

Try and install the XP drivers and see if you get any joy reviving the printer.

    OP...
As other posters have suggested, I think that your scanner has probably given up the ghost.

I have a 3170 photo scanner running under Windows 10 and use it daily

The only problem I encounter is when Win 10 has a major update (like the latest Ver.1709) whereby Windows insists in removing the superb Epson Scan software and replacing it with Windows Fax and Scan.
I just download the latest Epson software and TWAIN driver and it's ready to roll.
So if you have downloaded this from here:-
    https://epson.com/Support/Scanners/Perfection-Series/Epson-Perfection-3170-Photo/s/SPT_B11B161011
and it still won't play then perhaps it's ready to be retired.

sorry for delay in replying - am on the road at present. I agree scanner is old, but it was showing no sign of its age 2 months ago when I started my slide copying project. Shame if it has suddenly died. As I said, it lights up when everything is plugged in and I get what could be a software error message . :(

Andypix I am not sure what I have not done that you suggested. I removed all the Epson software from my pc, downloaded latest version for win7 from Epson website, then hooked it all up and tried again? what did I miss out?

did you try vuescan OP that someone suggested to you earlier?
It has its own drivers IIRC.
They used to have a feedback area on their webpage with quite a lot of positive reviews about old scanners being returned to usefulness .
I used to use it for an Epson scanner about 10 years ago and it was a very nice program.

Also and I know this is probably the first thing you did...have you tried changing the USB cable for another in case that is the problem?
