Found this on a techie site - and it is true that the Version 7 download for Epson scan does seem to double up with Vista download so maybe worth a try?

"Epson Scan compatibility issue with Windows 7 (Win 64 Pro)

I have searched high and low for a solution to this. It turns out that Epson never produced a Windows 7 version of Epson Scan, and they suggest you use the Vista build, which while download and install ok would produce an error upon start.

"Having tried everything, it turns out there is a bug in the Epson Scan Environment variable, the solution is at Epson Scan Utility won't work - Geeks to Go Forum

But in case that link goes dead, here it is:

Solution: Open regedit.exe and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EPSON\EPSON Scan\ES00BC select the "Environment" Key and delete it. This will cause the Epson Scan screen to open in the upper left corner of the screen the next time the program is launched.

Once we successfully ran the Epson Scan program the registry showed normal X,Y values for use when the program is launched again

Their is an independent software that should work on most models and OS .
Certainly worked on XP and Win 7 long time ago .

Yes, im aware that the older epson flatbeds dont work with W7 64

But as yours was working a couple of months ago, i took it as a given that you were using 32bit windows

If you are, in fact on 32 bit, then have you tried complete removal as outlined in post 6 ?

    Can you still photocopy?
Does the actual scanner still physically work independent of the computer?

No I cannot photocopy it will not work at all, always generates the same Epson not started message. I have Windows 7 Pro which I believe to be 64bit.

And yes it was processing slides very happily a couple of months ago. Just in case it is that particular PC we have tried using the scanner on another which is almost identical age and spec. I tried both loading original disk drivers and downloading the one from the Epson site. Same error message: Epson scanner not started.

Ironically I do have a an Epson Perfection V370 scanner which I purchased a while back, when I started the slide conversion program, so that I could have one scanner dedicated to slide conversion and another for mainstream scanning. I had never got round to installing the V370 so I did so yesterday. The driver CD prompted me to download the latest drivers from Epson which I did, and it worked fine.

Now here's the thing, when I downloaded the V370 scanner drivers from Epson, it brought up a screen which prompted me to choose which scanner I wanted to use- the Perfection 3170 or the V370. So I immediately plugged in the 3170 scanner and selected that option, no luck Same old error.

This is why I think it must be something in a recent windows 7 update. Will try the regedit fix suggested above when I get time.

    No windows update caused this.

To check the bit depth of your OS, click start, then RIGHT click on computer and go to properties.

On the resulting screen, you will see either 32bit or 64 bit.

You seem to be ignoring my suggestion of how to completely remove the borked epson stuff from your machine so i will politely bow out of this thread

Andy Pix - sorry did what you said, removing old Epson software and reloading new from their website, but that did not work. Also I have windows 7 Pro which I believe is 64 bit and it worked until a couple of months ago.

(I went to start, right clicked on properties but all I go was taskbar and start menu properties nothing about 32 or 64 bit version.) As above, I have Win 7 Pro which I understand is 64 bit but the Epson scanner definitely worked on it until a couple of months ago, I have the scanned in slides, using the Epson scanner and its slide software, as proof.
