can no longer run Epson scanner with windows 7

I have an Epson Perfection scanner 3170 which I have been using to scan in a collection of photographic slides on my windows 7 PC. It was working about 2 months ago but now it is not. When I try to open the program to do some scanning, or try to scan an image, I get an error message, "Epson scan cannot be started. Try the Trouble shooter."

There is a supposedly up to date Windows 7 version of the Epson scanning software on Epson's site, which I have downloaded and installed. That will not run either, same error message. Their Trouble Shooter is no use, just suggests checking plugs etc. I have looked up the failure on my PCs reliability Monitor and that just says that the program stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.

The Perfection is a nice little scanner and I have got very used to using it for my slides, of which I have a lot. I have a dedicated work station set up. I do not know why it has stopped working, I assume some update to Windows 7 has occurred recently which conflicts with it.

Is there any way I can fix iit to work?

  • Roll back windows to an earlier (working ? date) via System Restore ( if you have it enabled )

Uninstall all the Epson software for it and restart the machine.
Then reload the software using the latest version of it from Epson's website and power it up when asked. Should now work.

    My PC uses Win 7.
I have an HP Scan/Copy/Printer but never use the HP software to make a scan.
I use Windows Fax and Scan.
Try clicking on Start/All programs/Windows Fax and Scan/New scan.
If it works for you, you can right-click and pin to the Taskbar.

^^ This - great post from Neil.

What I will add is that depending how forked it is, you may need to completely de-Epson your computer before re-installing ..

This guide is for printers but most of it rings true
