Correctly weighed?

I bought a prepacked pack of salmon from Morrisons supermarket which is labelled whole salmon, the pack is labelled net weight 1.595kg and £/kg 7.00 ,pack price £11.17 when I weighed at home the salmon came to just under 1kg, when I returned to store to question this I was told this net weight was the weight of the whole fish before they filleted it, that because it was marked whole salmon they had done the work for me and if it had been labelled salmon fillet it would be more expensive. I asked if I could have my other 600g of fish trimmings as I had payed for them but no and no refund for misleading packaging. It states nowhere on the label of this surely this is not legal the weight on the pack must be the weight of the finished product. The manager said this is policy across the UK stores. These packs are sat in cold cabinets next to other prepacked salmon which you would compare the weight with other packs to see if it works out good value. What are your thoughts on this.

  • What happens if you buy a pork chop, do they mark the pack with the weight of the whole pig?
  • I made that point with steak and cow, I also spotted another post elsewhere from 2015 same issue and a guy who worked for morrisons said the trimmings should be packaged as well, so they've been doing this for years but now seem to think it's OK to charge you £7 a kilo for the bits they throw in the bin.

They can't use the weight of the whole salmon. For a start, its not a whole salmon. Maybe it once was but not at the point it was sold.

If they need to provide the net weight rather than including the packaging or need to state net drained weight rather than inclusive of any liquid in the product, they sure as hell can't include parts of a fish that aren't even included in the purchase.

I'd push them for a refund & report it to TS to deal with.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Can you? I thought you now had to go to Citizens Advice.

So seriously asked them for a load of crap that you couldn't actually eat?

What were you expecting them do to empty a dustbin and give you the contents for you to consume?

It's quiet obvious really why they wouldn't do that.

You can make a nice stock or soup out of what you described as crap. Or give it to the cats.

    I don't see the problem.

I go to the local fishmonger and ask for a whole salmon.

They weigh it and tell me how much.

I ask for it to be filleted because I won't do as good a job as the fishmonger will and I won't have to bin the smelly bits I don't want.

That's exactly what happened to your fish, just with added conversation.

I assume that you could have bought a whole salmon if you wanted to and didn't because of the faff of doing it yourself. I honestly think that you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Edit - it must have been pretty obvious from looking at it that this was a whole salmon that had been prepared. You knew exactly what you were getting.

Which is fair enough if you buy the salmon and the fishmonger prepares it for you. If picking up a pre packaged item off the shelf then it should state on the packaging or boldly on the display exactly what you are getting.

OP, does the label show a disclaimer "unprepared weight" or such like ?

But the op said a filleted salmon, marked as filleted salmon, would have cost more money, which I can well believe. Is it really worth all this fuss?

Yes but if the supermarket are to advertise a 1.5kg of salmon then that's what they should provide. If they want to sell at the same price as a non-filleted salmon they should provide the new reduced weight with a higher cost per kg.

In the grand scheme of things this isn't a huge issue, but if the OP feels compelled they should send an email to the shop and follow with a complaint to citizens advice.
