If the part fails and there is someone seriously injured or killed due to the poor quality/faulty part, their public liability insurance will wash their hands of the claim as there would be no way to track the manufacture, factory or date etc the part was made.The claim would rest at the door of the garage/mechanic that fitted the part.
Sounds dramatic but the garage owner could loose his business/home and everything they have worked years for because a customer wanted to save a few pounds supplying parts themselves.
There liability would be far from clear cut.0 -

My problem is I drive an MGR MG ZT Mk2 which were produced for only around 18months before MGR went under.
The newest now being 13/14yrs old and a defunct maker, quite a few parts are now NLA, and due to the short production run, pattern parts are not viable for manufacturers to make.
NLA parts such as shocks, brake backplates, lower suspension arms and tank straps are occasionally found and made available as NOS from the owners club, so self supply parts can be the only option.0 -
