Can't fit customer supplied parts?

I've been getting some quotes for a cambelt/water pump/tension job on my car. Coming in at around £250...One of the garages tell me that they can't fit customer supplied parts as it voids their liability insurance? !!!!!!? Are garages now like this?

A lot of garages won't fit your parts as quite often you can strip a car and discover wrong parts have been supplied. That and it removes their profit.

It's not always cost effective to supply your own parts. If you supply them and they are faulty or become faulty you have no rights to repair and will ending up paying twice on labour.

Don't blame them. They have no idea of the age, quality of the parts or how they have been stored. They fit them and the belt let's go and destroys your engine you would ask them to put it right at their cost.

They fit parts from their supplier and they are protected by their parts manufactures warranty.

Also bear in mind a few years ago there were a load of counterfit gates belts that hit the market which were of dubious quality.

Suggest they note on the invoice, due to customer supplied parts no warranty provided in event of failure or do the job yourself.

    There's three reasons.

    1. Because the parts may prove to be wrong, tying their ramp up while you muck about sourcing replacements.
    2. Because there's only going to be arguments if there's problems as to whether the parts or fitment are to blame.
    3. Because they don't want to deal with the kind of tightwad who insists on sourcing their own parts to save a few quid at the expense of their profit.

    You buy, you fit.
  • The garage I use told another family member that them supplying the parts might be a bit more expensive, but it was a built in guarantee.
Same garage replaced the front pads and discs for free on the FILs car at mot time, as they had replaced them under a year previously at service/mot time.

It depends on the garage. I've had a main dealer fit (genuine manufacturer) parts that I have supplied for a service.

I always supply my own oil.

I tought the parts for cambelt jobs were quite cheap relative to the labour.

I would certainly let the garage supply the parts because they won't be able to say

"It was your parts mate wot done it"

Find a garage that will do it. Some will, some won't. I have a local tyre garage that is happy to fit my tyres bought online for £10 each. His argument is that I am happy with the exact tyre choice I want, he doesn't have to order or hold stock, he doesn't have to tie up credit, and I'm happy so I'll keep going back to him.

  • There are definite advantages and disadvantages, the disadvantage being they may use cheap replacement parts so you get a cheap quote, and they may not use a full kit and exclude the tensioner.
