    Good news, guys!! I think redux and ballyblack were on the right tack.

    My mum recently got a new Samsung phone that seemed to do a lot of downloading in the set-up. Well, anyway about 2 days ago she found a folder called Google Photos and there they were, all intact running from Xmas 2012!!

    She was thrilled and sends her best wishes to all that helped track them down.

    Great job, guys!
