  • Hi jexysbird.

however I find that it's the (little) time I've available that's the stopper - cleaning them wouldn't bother me - we've got ladders etc. :rotfl:

I'd go for a local garage then (but I'm not an expert on cars:rotfl:) - do you have a good one?

Thanks for that setmefree2. Previously I've used main dealers, 3 year warranties etc, but I've a local garage in mind that a friend of mine has used a few times recently and recommends.

    Hi jexysbird,

Think you've having a problem when quoting posts. At the end of the quoted block, there should be a [/quote] Suspect you've inadvertently deleted this, thus the reason why you're not seeing the quoted response in a rectangle above your text.

Very easy to delete the closing quote - I've done this a few times. You should be able to re-edit your post to add a closing quote...

    Hope that helps,

Hi Financialbliss just thought I would come and say hello instead of lurking in here.

I think the price you pay for your window cleaning is really good. I pay £8 for what sounds roughly the same size house but I don't have a conservatory.

Also I would go for independant garage as it is outside warranty. The only thing you might need a main garage for is if something deap inside e.g the computer chip that goes wrong (sorry not very techie) and the main dealer can hook up to a diagnostic tool. Its usually things like imobilisers or radio codes that requires special equipment to fix.

Well done on the overpayments keep going.

Try again! Thanks for the help we will see if it works this time!

We pay the £12 for for 9 large windows, quite wide patio doors and front/back door, which I don't think is bad, although as I say, we only have them done 3 times a year. For the amount of windows you have it sounds a good price that you pay!:rotfl:

  • Hi FB

Been lurking for ages but thought I could maybe contribute something.

We have our windows done evey eight weeks and they are usually fine for that period. The price you are paying sounds good though for what they do.
Ours never do the frames or the window sill so they still look really bad and I get sent out afterwards to clean up after the window cleaners.

On the garage front I use a non main dealer garage for most things. One thing that you might want to check is whether they have a diagnostic machine and can reset the service switch etc after they have had it.

The really local garage to me has had my wife's car on two occaisions and not been able to fix the problem as "it needs to go on the computer and we don't have one" so I've had to take it elsewhere but still had to pay the labour charge for them to tinker with it, which meant it cost me even more:mad:

My brother in law took his for a service and they could not reset the service warning light etc so
    a) he drives around with the warning lights on all the time
    b) he has to doule check when it's due a service as the trip computer was not reset and does not count down anymore

so it might be worth checking that they can do this before you take it there.
  • Hi everyone who's posted in the last 24 hours or so...

Was without broadband last night - we're back up now.

Turns out there was a nick in the telephone extension cable and it gave up last night. Hopefully I'll get around to some replies this evening.

Apologies if you thought I was ignoring everyone!

After reading all the windows replies I'm sure I'm being robbed!

£15 per month. For 3 sets of patio doors, front of lounge window, small kitchen window, 3 x bedroom windows and tiny bathroom window.

Any ideas for negotiating a discount - perhaps I should print out this page of the thread?

A couple of questions this evening!

Window cleaner. They’re now getting cleaned once a month @ 4.60. Will trial this for a while to see how it goes!
Car service. Just got a letter from dealership where we bought the car indicating that the car is nearly due for an annual service and touting for business. Do you use a main dealership, independent garage or get the car serviced less frequently than annually?

    FB.
Apologies didn't get much chance to keep up on this thread.

Windows; £8.50 per month (or thereabouts - probably averages every 6 weeks, which suits me) for some 14 windows (where a bay window is three, before you imagine a mansion!) two doors plus pair of French doors. £25 per year for all other soffits and facias. This is I know cheap for Cambridgeshire.
(Time is main reason in our case)

Car Service; With Vauxhall and Ford locally we have always had good servicing and to be honest, the actual price for service +MOT with dealership has been proven to be similar to that from independents for us, even when the quote was cheaper from the latter. If looking to keep a vehicle and sell at up to 5yrs old then dealer service will be a good plus point. Thereafter, go on price. Whichever, do get done regularly.

For my Jag, well I do use a dealer (even with 03 plate) and know I could use a specialist independent, which I may look into. However, dealer is easier to access so it is not such an easy call....

As you now have to get the MOT you may as well align annual service and MOT together, it'll never fail. You can of course get quotes and see what you can negotiate, do ask if they include VAT

Finally, with low mileage, do recognise that tyres will harden over time for very low mileage and may need replacing before the tread so indicates.

I used VW for the 1st 3 yrs, then went to local garage - much cheaper and never any problems. Plus they will do things like change a headlight bulb for just the cost of the bulb, if I play the helpless female ;).
Re alignment, I now have service, MOT, insurance & car tax all at the same time . It means that all my six-monthly bonus disappears, but at least I don't have to save up for it.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
