How much should I be paying my parents for rent?

Hi everyone!

I've just finished university and started a new job where I'll be living at home. I was just wondering how much would be a fair amount to contribute towards the house for food/rent/bills etc. My parents have never been in this situation before so they don't really know how much to charge.

I'm thinking around £400 per month?

Well done for offering !! - when i was at home my parents took 20% of my wages which they gave back to me when I was making wedding plans to help purchase our first home - which was so thoughtful and considerate. A generous gesture I will never forget <3

£400 a month sounds very fair. It might be an idea to sit down and talk it over with them. Find out roughly what they spent each month on food/bills etc to make sure that you're paying them a realistic amount towards those. HTH :T

    Only you/your parents can decide.

How much do you earn, how much income do they have coming into the house, what are their outgoings, what is rent like in the area you are in, what would you be doing with extra money?

Not expecting you to answer, but think about these questions which will help you work it out.

Pay them what you would pay in rent if you moved out. It will help you to learn how to budget on that amount so that you won't get a shock when you do move out.

Well done for offering to pay keep.

If you have been away from home whilst at Uni & there are no other siblings at home then it might be a good idea to ensure that you are able to give each other a little space from time to time. Whilst we love our children, sometimes, especially when they have left home once, it is nice not to have them there. So make sure that you have enough spare to pay for a weekend away somewhere, anywhere occasionally.
  • Surely Market rent is far too high, otherwise you may as well just move out and pay the rent.
It does depend on a lot of factors the other poster said but I would have thought the whole point of living with parents is to save money for the future. Separate issue but I never planned for this and very much wished I had given it some thought at your age!

Well done for being so considerate. Prob in reality depends how much you earn and what your parents say but I think £400 sounds very fair. Its cheaper for you than living alone but substantial enough to really assist you parents.
I admire you. I never paid my parents anything and they never asked, but I do regret not offering. I probably came across as quite ungrateful.

Will you also have use of a car? Petrol? Insurance?
