  • I am a 17 year old part time worker at the local butchers making £73 per week. My parents request board which i am happy to provide. my only issue is, how much should i pay. they want the payment weekly however they demand i save £40 a week in my bank that i cannot spend, also requesting £20 of board every week leaving me with only £13 pound a week to spend on myself and college equipment. is this a fair deal? or can someone please help advise me as to how much i should pay or what to expect.

    For what?

Honestly I'd be asking what board they want and telling them what you choose to do with the rest of your money is none of their business, which it isn't. Maybe put it more politely than that though.
  • They haven't given me a reason as to wha to save the money for. However in my house what i do is never just my business especially when it comes to money, we will be discussing it later but i just need a rough idea what to be requesting or expecting so i dont go in at a disadvantage.

The problem is it's their house and therefore their rules. I know people are going to come along and say that £20 a week for board and lodgings is a bargain but to change a 17 year old who is studying and working part time is a bit mean. Do your parents need the money or are they just trying to teach you a lesson?

Have you explained to them that £13 a week isn't sufficient for you to live on?

It's completely reasonable that the parents name the level of keep money that they want/need.

It's completely unreasonable to then tell the poster what they are to do with the rest of their own money!

@Jack0999 perhaps draw up a budget so your family can see £13 a week isn't enough for you to live on.

And consider that until someone stands up to that level of intrusion it isn't going to change or improve.

I've had battles with my own mother over extreme nosiness, it hasn't been easy at all but we are in a much better place after I stood up for myself, ignored the hurt feelings and remained consistent.

At 17 you are still a dependent child and they still claim child benefit for you, so they shouldn’t really be charging anything.

I see it as completely reasonable and responsible for parents to teach their children financial skills, such as saving. However, I agree that negotiation about the exact sums would be reasonable - what are you expected to cover with your earnings - do your parents buy your clothes or do you? Do you need to pay for travel? Lunches? Or is it just for time out with friends and Christmas presents?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Perhaps you could (& no I don't really mean this) suggest that for £13 it isn't really worth you getting the job!

How on earth will they be able to tell if you are saving even a penny of your earnings. Unless they are demanding access! In which case there may well be a serious problem here!
