Can I cancel existing breakdown cover...

Options
Can I cancel existing breakdown cover and add a new one with my new car insurance quote? I currently pay £30+ breakdown cover with AA but my new quote says I can get what looks very similar with RAC for £8.50 per month! Does this sound right? If so, would 8 be able to simply cancel with AA and get this add on with my new insurance? Thanks

Don't see why not, but you may not get a full refund from the AA. There are other cheaper providers too though.

Confused as to how much you are paying for breakdown cover at the moment - is that really over £30 a month?

In terms of cancellation, it is down to what their agreement said. Typically, if you are paying monthly, you have taken on insurance for the year and are paying in arrears. You can cancel, but there will be cancellation and admin fees. You need to ring up to find what they are, then you can work out whether you save money.

My experience is that deals for breakdown cover with insurance are not as low as going with some quite reputable deals available on the Internet, using Green Flag.

Also, make sure you are getting the cover you need - breakdown cover can get expensive when you start paying for extras that you don't need, e.g. European cover and you have no intention of going abroad. Also, if you have a new car, make sure you are not already covered by a manufacturer deal - some of which can offer free breakdown cover if you service with them (mine has Europe wide cover if I service with them, which is worth the difference between independent and dealer servicing).

When does your existing breakdown cover expire?
Why link it to your insurance, can you not get it cheaper by going direct.
What type of cover do you get?

£8.50 pcm seems extortionate - use Quidco (let me know if you want referring, you get £5 or so just for joining if I refer you) or TopCashback to buy independently and bring the cost down.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I'm currently paying £35 per month with the AA, with no unnecessary extras. What got me thinking was when I was renewing my car insurance the breakdown option with Esure was £8.50 with the RAC. I really could do with getting that insurance sorted bit I guess I could wait until I've chatted with someone from the AA to make sure I don't end up owing them money etc.?

Blimey! If £8.50 sounds extortionate what about the £35 I've been paying with the AA!

I think I will just sort the insurance for now, look into dropping AA and check out Quidco so yes, that referral offer sounds good. Cheers

What AA package costs over £30 a month? Are you sure thats not a year? Nothing on the AA site anywhere near that much.

Unless its within the first 14 days your unlikely to get any refund, but the whole lot maybe payable. Check first.

It's probably one of those special 'loyal customer' prices the AA charge for those people who don't shop around for cover...

Yep, been busy with a combination of work, dealing with a horrible divorce etc. etc. and now the fog is (slowly) clearing I'm just starting to get on top of a few things. Really annoyed at the way I've allowed myself to be ripped off to be honest. What's the average people are paying for breakdown cover? Thanks

I pay 120 a year to my bank (nationwide) form my account just for the breakdown cover, as it covers me all over Europe, any car, van, motorhome, or motorcycle owned or not, of any age, up to 7.5T and 8M long. Important for me with a 4T motorhome.

The account comes with a load of other insurance and 'perks' but I'm not bothered about the rest.
