box junction what to do when others ignore it?

The is a box junction near me, at busy times it is a nightmare to cross.

Two lanes at the start of the box junction, the lanes then filter into one after the box junction.

What happens is I will wait in the left lane until it is clear, however cars in the right lane cross straight over and wait in the box junction, moving over into the left (which should be my space) when it is clear.

I have tried sitting in the right lane at the start but the same thing happens people in the left go straight over and wait in the junction.

To make it worse there are traffic lights so you only have the opportunity to move when the lights are green.

What is the correct way to handle this situation?

I do ignore it, I have no choice otherwise I would be stuck there all night  I do make sure when I cross I am the first car siting in it and not blocking the road it is designed to keep clear. I sometimes still have to wait a while for this as people sit two cars back which blocks the road.

I was wondering what the correct thing would be to do?

I'm assuming you've passed your driving test therefore you should know how a box junction operates. To refresh your mind:

Do not enter a box junction unless your exit is clear or you are turning right.

I've been in this situation where obeying the rules simply means you sit there while everyone else (the rule breakers) carry on with their journey in deliberate ignorance.

Worth checking whether there is a yellow box enforcement camera - if not - then it's open to you whether to follow others.

Yes I do know how a box junction works I know that everyone in this instance does not follow those rules, therefore what do I do sit there all night until the traffic calms down holding up myself and those behind me, or join them in breaking the rules?

I doubt it would be a defense if I got caught to say "well everyone else was, I had no choice"

It's a lot easier in the US, just reach into the glove box and take out your handgun....

But the thing is if I don't I never get to move.

Its different in a one lane in one out box junction you can sit and wait as nobody behind you can move until you have.

This is two lanes entering the junction so people can overtake me leaving me there all night!

It is actually three lanes into the junction but the third goes off in a different direction. I have even known people to get into the third lane and cut over the other two to sit in the junction, although this is rare.

Just don't use that defence when you get a ticket. "But everyone else does it.."

Exactly so what do you do in that situation?

It is a terrible junction sometimes when the lights go green for the incoming traffic they can't move as there are cars in the box junction blocking their path. I am not a fan of cameras but I think one is really needed in this case.
