I know! Not that it's really my place to say, but you don't really need a phone when you are 9 do you?

I know what your saying, I wanted to wait till my daughter went to high school before she had a phone as it was I upgraded phones and passed mine down to DD1 & then DD2 got hers she was 10 and never used it. now she is in high school and does more independent things for xmas she has asked fro a new phone, so we said that was ok.

  • You spend all day with your mates at school. Why do you need one for out of school hours?

Meh, I wouldn't trust phones health wise with children. I mean nothing conclusively proves its harmful, but its not proven that its not harmful to kids either.... Thus based on that I'd rather not take a risk with my children?

lol well mobiles weren't around when I was at school but I used to spend all day at school with my friends and then still be able to chat on the phone in the evenings ;) I think that's a girl thing though.

  • There was an LG phone in Sainsburys with a colour screen for only £9.99 looked ok for the price :)

  • I've had a Nokia 2610 for 2 years - fairly unattractive to thieves, monochrome screen, no camera, good battery life, fairly durable (it's been dropped a few times).

Could probably pick one up on fleabay.

I would look on the Virgin website, great customer service and you can get a fairly basic phone there.

    http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/home.do

Register the number on the Virgin website and should it be lost or stolen they can get it blocked very quickly.

Other great things about virginmobile is 1) when you register on website it gives you an extra £2 credit. 2) you can keep control of top-ups and even view calls made via website If you can find someone to refer you as a new customer, they get £10 free.
  • I would say - don't insult his intelligence by getting a real cheapie. Whether we like it or not kids know what is available, how good they are etc. OK it may be peer pressure to a degree but you wouldn't buy them a bike with stabilisers on if they really wanted a racer and while they may not use the phone for the purpose it was intended - i.e. phoning people while out!!. They will, however, use it to show off to their friends, listen to music, take photos and videos and text people occasionally. My nine year old rings me from the bottom of the garden to ask if she can have "10 more minutes to play"!!!:rotfl:
My friends bought her little boy a real cheapie for his birthday when he had announced to everyone he was getting a mobile and it was such a shame -he was totally embarrased, wouldn't take the phone out with him etc. Bless him - I felt quite sorry for him.
My nine year old has a better phone than me OR her dad. Costs us hardly anything in credit (tesco sim card) but she can bluetooth ringtones etc to her hearts content. Treat it like any other present you would buy for your child - and get the best you can -at nine they aren't doing anything out of the ordinary with it - oh and they will always remember getting their first mobile for the rest of their lives.....
